The relationship between the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition instances and Insight
software is shown in the Figure 1.
• An MSCS cluster defines “virtual servers”. A virtual server has a unique static client-facing network
name and IP address that are registered with the DNS. Within the cluster, the same network name
and IP address are associated with a Windows service that, at any time, may run on, at most, one
of the cluster’s systems (physical servers).
• Clients access the Insight software CMS through a virtual server. Clients connect to HP SIM and
Insight software applications through its network name. Network traffic addressed to the virtual
server is received by the HP SIM service, wherever it is running in the cluster. Thus, a client has no
need to know on which system the service is actually running.
• Likewise, HP SIM uses the network name of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 virtual server to connect
to a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database instance. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is installed as a
cluster service.
• The databases used by the Insight software reside in a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database
instance. Other data files are stored on the Insight software shared disk.
• Figure 1 shows the MSCS cluster with a virtual server for Insight software and another for MSCS
SQL Server 2005. In this document, the preferred system for running Insight software is called
the primary system. The system on which SQL Server 2005 normally runs is called the
secondary system.

The cluster monitors the services belonging to HP SIM, Insight software, and Microsoft SQL Server
2005. Should a service fail, the cluster automatically presents that service’s shared storage to the
other system and restarts the failed service there.
