Applying updates to the SQL Server 2012 Enterprise
SQL Server uses an Incremental Servicing Model (ISM). The model is described in An Incremental Servicing Model is available
from the SQL Server team to deliver hotfixes for reported problems at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935897/. Issues that
have broad impact and are well- tested, such as security issues, are packaged into General Distribution Releases and
distributed through Microsoft Update, Windows Update, or both.
Other hotfixes are released periodically as cumulative updates. These updates must be requested. See The SQL Server 2012
builds that were released after SQL Server 2012 at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2772858 and Cumulative update
package 5 for SQL Server 2012 is available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2777772. Microsoft recommends that you
apply only needed hotfixes in production after testing. (There are other more selective delivery mechanisms for more critical
hotfixes.)
A Cumulative Update must be applied to both cluster nodes, one at a time, to the node that does not own the SQL Server
cluster resources.
