Appendix D: Applying Insight Management Software

Patches

This appendix provides an overview of the steps to apply Insight Management Software patches

during or after an upgrade to a major release. Before applying the patch the Insight Management

software should be installed on the system. To install an Insight Management Software Patch, follow

the instructions provided with the patch.

The Insight Management Software patches can be applied in three ways:

• During a fresh installation of Insight Management release.

• During an upgrade to a major Insight Management release.

• After the fresh installation of an Insight Management release.

Option 1: Installing a patch during a fresh install of Insight Management

release

The main body of this whitepaper describes installing Insight Management in a cluster. It also

discusses applying an incremental update, if applicable, and any applicable patches during a fresh

install. The steps from the main body of the white paper are summarized as follows:

1. Create a two-node failover cluster with Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator and

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise installed.

2. Install Insight Management 7.0 on the primary system, with secondary node powered down to

avoid unintentional failover. Immediately afterwards, install the Insight Management 7.0

incremental update, if applicable, on the primary system, followed by an install of any applicable

Insight Management Software Patches.

3. Install Insight Management 7.0 on the secondary system with primary node powered down.

Immediately afterwards, install the Insight Management 7.0 incremental update, if applicable, on

the secondary system, followed by an install of any applicable Insight Management Software

Patches.

Note:

In the case of installing patches during a fresh install, re-applying the patch

on the secondary system is required rather than simply a registry update.

4. Add cluster resources for Insight Management, complete the Insight Management configuration,

and validate the installation.

Option 2: Installing a patch during an upgrade to a major Insight

Management release

Appendix B: Upgrading clustered Insight Management describes upgrading Insight Management in a

cluster. It also discusses installing an incremental update, if applicable, followed by any applicable

Insight Management Software Patches, during an upgrade to a new major release of Insight

Management. The steps from

Appendix B: Upgrading clustered Insight Management are summarized

as follows:

1. Back up the cluster including the Insight Management and SQL Server shared disks.

2. Install any prerequisites for the new software on both cluster nodes.
