Logical Host Connection Specifications
The following figures show examples of two logical host connections. Both examples support ESCON
Multiple Image Facility (EMIF). With ESCON, the number of Device Addressing per channel port is
limited to 1024. With FICON, the number increases to 16384.
In the following figure:
• Up to 1,024 unit addresses are supported for each CHL port (limit of the ESCON CHL port
specification).
• To cover 16,384 DEVs (all address ranges of the storage system) from one system, system
generation must be divided every 1024 DEVs (4 CUs).

In the following figure, up to 16,384 unit addresses are supported for each CHL port (in this case,
the maximum limit is increased). In this example, CHL path configuration can be reduced.
