HP StorageWorks XP Disk Array Mainframe Host Attachment and Operations Guide XP24000, XP20000 (A5951 - 96151, September 2007)
Resource Management
XP External Storage Software
XP External Storage Software is a feature first introduced on the XP disk array that enables users to
realize the virtualization of the storage system. Users can connect other storage systems to the XP disk
array and access the data on the external storage system over virtual devices on the XP disk array.
Functions such as TrueCopy for Mainframe and Cache Residency can be performed on the external
data. External storage systems can be connected to the XP disk array's external ports over a switch
using a Fibre Channel interface, and external volumes are mapped to XP disk array virtual volumes.
Cache LUN XP
Cache LUN XP allows users to store specific data in cache memory. Cache LUN XP increases the data
access speed for the cache-resident data by enabling read and write I/Os to be performed at front-end
host data transfer speeds. The cache areas (called cache extents) are dynamic and can be added
and deleted at any time. The XP24000/XP20000 supports up to 1024 addressable cache extents.
Cache LUN XP operations can be performed for data on open-system LUs as well as mainframe LVIs
(for example, 3390-9), including custom (VLL and LUSE) volumes. Use of Cache LUN XP in conjunction
with the Virtual LVI/LUN feature will achieve better performance improvements than when either of
these options is used individually.
Cache Manager
Cache Manager enables users to perform Cache LUN XP operations on mainframe LVIs by issuing
commands from the mainframe host system to the storage system.
Compatible PAV
Compatible PAV enables the mainframe host system to issue multiple I/O requests in parallel to single
logical devices (LDEVs). Compatible PAV can provide substantially faster host access to the mainframe
data stored in the storage system. The Workload Manager (WLM) host software function enables the
mainframe host to utilize the storage system's Compatible PAV functionality. The storage system
supports both static and dynamic PAV functionality.
Data Protection
Volume Security
Volume Security allows users to restrict mainframe (z/OS, S/390) host access to the logical devices
(LDEVs) on the storage system. Each LDEV can be set to communicate only with user-selected host(s).
Volume Security prevents other hosts from seeing the secured LDEV and from accessing the data
contained on the secured LDEV. The licensed Volume Security software on the XP Remote Web Console
displays the volume security information and allows you to perform volume security operations. The
Volume Security Port option can be used to specify the storage system ports that hosts can use to
access logical volumes.
