Thin Provisioning and Smart Tiers
You can use Thin Provisioning (THP) and Smart Tiers (Smart) volumes with BC P-VOLs and S-VOLs.
You can also use THP and Smart volumes with BC reserved volumes. The following restrictions
apply:
• You should share THP and Smart volumes with both the BC P-VOL and S-VOLs, rather than
one or the other.
• If you share an THP or Smart volume with only the P-VOL, or only the S-VOL, you cannot
perform the Quick Restore operation.
To perform the Quick Restore, both P-VOL and S-VOLs must be shared with THP or Smart
volumes.
Also, sharing an THP or Smart volume with only the S-VOL is not recommended for the Quick
Restore because the S-VOL consumes the same amount of the pool capacity as the P-VOL.
• You cannot perform BC pair operations while doing the following:
Increasing THP volume capacity◦
◦ Initializing the DP pool
• The maximum size of THP or Smart volume that you can use as a BC P-VOL, S-VOL, and
reserve volume is 4 TB (4398046511104 bytes).
CAUTION: You cannot use TB, GB, or MB specifications for BC volumes. If you want to
create a 4 TB P-VOL, secondary, or reserve volume, do not use the terabyte specification;
instead only use the block specification.
The block-size equivalent to 4 TB is 8589934592 blocks.
• If a BC paircreate or pairresync is performed while zero pages are being reclaimed, the
zero-page data-reclaiming operation is interrupted.
External Storage Access Manager
You can share the BC P-VOL with the External Storage Access Manager (ESAM) S-VOL. However,
you cannot share other ESAM volumes.
• You cannot share the ESAM P-VOL with BC.
• You cannot share the ESAM quorum disk with BC.
