1 HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Overview HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Software collects, monitors, and displays the performance of XP and P9000 disk arrays. HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor collects performance data for individual components such as LDEV, CHIP/CHA, ACP/DKA, DKC, and MP blades (applicable for only P9000 disk arrays).

These FAQs are compiled periodically and the document is available at the following location: www.hp.com/go/PerformanceAdvisor-support-docs. If the DNS server cannot locate the management station and open the default HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor applet, enter http(s)://[IP address]/pa/xppaLogChanger.jsp. 1. Select Start ⇒ Run and type services.msc in the command line. The Services dialog box appears. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Right-click HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Database service and select Stop from the drop-down list. Repeat the step for stopping the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Database Listener service. Select Start ⇒ Run and type appwiz.cpl in the command line. Remove Oracle from the list of programs. Go to :\Program Files and delete the folder for Oracle.
If the installation fails on a UNIX host, the Path system variable on your host is not set to the installed JRE location. So, while installing a HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor UNIX host agent, the installation might fail displaying the following error: JAVA not found The reason might be that the Path system variable on your host is not pointing to the location where JRE is installed. Resolution Set the Path system variable to the location, where JRE is installed on your UNIX host.
9. Remove the existing instance of the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor OpenVMS Integrity Server (IA-64) (IA-64) host agent and then install the host agent again. Perform the steps listed to resolve the error: Start the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Database Listener service manually by completing the following steps: 1. Open the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora files available in the following location: %PADB_HOME%\oradb\ADMIN\NETWORK. 2. If an incorrect DNS name is specified, replace it with the correct DNS name of the management station. If the problem persists, replace the DNS name with the IP address of the management station.
1. Verify if the real-time server (HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor RealTime Server) is running on the host. Restart the service if it has stopped. For HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Real-time to run, the management station (MS) must be able to ping the host agent (HA) using the hostname(FQDN) of the HA. 2. Verify whether the host agent name displayed in HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor is correct. It appears in the HostAgent list on the RealTimeChart screen.

Verify that the following Oracle services are active: %PADB_HOME%\ora_db\bin • HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat • HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Monitor • HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Security • HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Database • HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Database Listener Retry the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor upgrade procedure.
EULA not visible on the installer screen Cause Sometimes the EULA is not visible on the installer screen. Resolution If EULA is not visible on the installer, change the display resolution of the monitor and try again. Troubleshooting configuration issues This section describes the troubleshooting scenarios that might arise when you try to perform configuration related activities.
4. 5. 6. 7. If you are using SSL Apache Server (HTTPS), click Add Port. If you are not using SSL Apache Server, skip to step 8. Enter HTTPS in the Name text box, enter 443 in the Port number text box, and click TCP. Click OK to save changes and close the window. Verify that the HTTPS box is checked on the Exceptions tab.
An incorrect management station DNS or IP address is specified in the host agent paxp_service.properties file. Resolution Provide the correct DNS or IP address of the management station in the paxp_service.properties host agent file by completing the following steps: 1. Edit the following field in the paxp_service.properties file and provide the correct DNS or IP address of your management station: ManagementStation.Hostname= • On a Windows host, the paxp_service.
Resolution Verifying the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat service. Manually verify if the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat service is active on the management station. If the service has stopped, try to restart the service by following these steps: 1. Select Start ⇒ Run and type services.msc. The Services dialog box appears. 2. Right-click HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat service and select Start from the drop-down list.
3. Restart the host agent services. Cause An Unknown Host error is displayed when you view the host agent details in the Host Information table in HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor. This is because, the host name might not be resolved. Resolution Do the following: • Ensure that the host is up and running. Try to ping the host (command prompt>ping ). • The host browser-side system is able to resolve the host name. Try to ping the host (command prompt>ping ).
For troubleshooting this issue, see “Host agent records do not appear in HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor after an install or upgrade” (page 15). Cause The command device is not created or presented to your host (probability of occurrence is higher with installations). Resolution See the topic, “Creating and presenting command devices to hosts” in the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Software Installation Guide available on Disk 2 in the software bundle.
See the topic, “Assigning GUIDs for command devices on a Windows host agent” in the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Software Installation Guide. For document download location, see “Related information” (page 81). Cause An incorrect port number is specified for HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor and host agent communication. A Connection refused error message appears when the host agent tries to establish connection with HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor.
3. 4. 5. From the list of host records under the Host Information tab, select the host record on which performance data collection stopped. Click Request Info and wait until the status is updated to show as Received. This verifies that the host and management station are communicating with each other. Initiate configuration and performance data collection. Cause The performance data collection schedules might not be created.
HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Oracle Database and Performance Advisor Tomcat services do not start on Windows 7 operating system, when the system is rebooted. Resolution Modify the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Database recovery settings. To modify the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Database recovery settings: 1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open field. 2. Right-click HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Database service, and select Properties. 3. Click the Recovery tab. 4.
Verify the stdout.
• ERROR [com.hp.xpsl.datastore.DBConnect]: Check if the Database is running. Please contact administrator or HP Support, if the exception continues. Listener refused the connection with the following error: ORA-12505, TNS: listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor. The Connection descriptor used by the client was: xxxx:1521:PADB. ERROR [com.hp.xpsl.datastore.DBConnect] Check if the Database is running. Please contact administrator or HP Support, if the exception continues.
4. 5. Save the text file. Start the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Database Listener service. Real-time server error: Selected component is not connected to the XP Disk Array or no activity happening on the component Cause The selected component may no longer be connected to the array or does not have any activity happening currently. If the following error appears on the RealTimeChart screen The selected component may no longer be connected to the array or does not have any activity happening currently.
Resolution Add the management station time in the Event Log screen by completing the following steps: 1. Log on to HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor. 2. Click Event Log in the left pane. 3. In the Start Time and End Time section, set the hour and time corresponding to that of the management station. Troubleshooting web client issues This section describes the troubleshooting scenarios that might arise when you try to access HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor after installation or upgrade.
Cause The Login screen is not displayed in certain browser environments. This occurs when the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor browser client starts, and HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor does not recognize that Java Plug-in 1.5 is installed. Resolution To clear the Java Plug-in cache: 1. Close all web browser application windows 2. Open the Windows Control Panel, and click Java Plug-in 3. In the Java Plug-in Control Panel dialog, click the Cache tab 4. Click Clear 5.
5. 6. 7. Under the DNS tab, select Append DNS suffixes. Add host name suffix. Click OK to save the settings. Cause Unable to browse to the management station. If you are seeing the Network Error (dns_unresolved_hostname) in your IE browser window, it might be because the URL that you are trying to access is not added as a trusted web site. Resolution To identify the management station to the DNS server: 1. Add to the list of addresses to bypass your proxy server.
3. 4. 5. 6. Navigate to the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section in the Settings window. Select Prompt for Download Signed ActiveX Controls. Select Prompt for Run ActiveX Controls And Plug-ins. Click Apply and then OK to save the modified security level. Cause When HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor management station is not added to the trusted sites, then any one of the following messages is displayed: • Alternate HTML content should be placed here. This content requires the Adobe Flash Player.

Resolution Configure the IE browser's web proxy server settings not use a proxy server for the IP address or fully qualified domain names of the management station. To configure the IE browser proxy server settings: 1. In a IE browser window, click Tools+Internet Options+Connections+LAN Settings. 2.
3. 4. 5. 6. Navigate to the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section in the Settings window. Select Prompt for Download Signed ActiveX Controls. Select Prompt for Run ActiveX Controls And Plug-ins. Click Apply and then OK to save the modified security level. Log on to HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor and start collecting the configuration and performance data for your XP and P9000 disk arrays.
2. 3. • HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Security • HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Tomcat If the software for HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor is listed in the Add/Remove Programs. If the Oracle directories exist at the following registry key locations, as the Oracle patch installer queries these registry keys: • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE is the registry key. inst_loc: is the name of the registry entry and its value will give the location of the Oracle inventory.
Error message: The Oracle patch installer has determined that one or more files under the directory are in use. For a list of all such files in the Oracle Base directory, refer to the Oracle patch installer log file __OraclePatch.log under . The installation wizard will exit now. Ensure that you close all applications holding the locked files before you rerun the installer.
1. 2. 3. Inspect the __OraclePatch.log file. Ensure that the OPatch folder located under %PADB_HOME%\ora_db\OPatch is not open in windows explorer or not pointed to by a command prompt. Ensure that the following services relevant for Oracle patch installation are stopped and no applications are accessing any files pointed to by %PADB_HOME% environment variable.
If you see errors related to the command device, such as the Attach command error, it implies that the command device is corrupted and needs to be recreated. HP XP P9000Watch has missing ports If XP Watch has missing ports, do the following: 1. Verify if all the ports presented through SLPR0 are seen as an output of HP XP P9000Watch. NOTE: 2. 3. Not all ports are displayed when the Wagent update is performed or missed out. Delete the cache files (wagent.iomap and wagent_’serialnum’.xpmap).
Enter a username and password pair

To enable multiprocessor optimization, you must modify the property for multiprocessor optimization in the serverparameters.properties file. By default, multiprocessor optimization is not enabled or switched off for HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor. 3 Error messages This section describes the error messages for HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor. The error messages are presented in the following format: • Error Title: Provides a brief description of the error • Error Description: Provides the cause of the error • Solution or Workaround: Provides the solution for resolving the error, or a workaround Installation error messages Table 1 (page 39) describes the error messages that you might see when installing HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor.

4 Frequently Asked Questions HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor Licensing Where do I find the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor registration number for generating a permanent license? The HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor registration number is included on the product entitlement certificate that is provided with every HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor License To USE (LTU) you purchase.
I have not received the product entitlement certificate and the registration number along with the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor v4.5 media kit. What should be the process followed to get the product registration number after an upgrade to v4.5 or later version? In order to receive the product entitlement certificate and the registration number, complete the following steps: 1. Enter the required information in the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor License Entitlement Request text file.
No. Permitted Volumes displayed in the View License Detail section for a specific XP or P9000 disk array are not the same as the Licensed Capacity. Permitted Volumes refers to the capacity of a single license key. The aggregate of the permitted volumes is displayed as the actual license capacity (TB). For example, consider that there is a permanent license and a term license installed on a given XP or P9000 disk array. The permitted volumes (TB) installed are 20 TB and 24 TB respectively.
Yes. The grace period of 60 days is also applicable for term and emergency license types. After a term or an emergency license expires, HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor enters a grace period of 60 days for all the associated XP or P9000 disk arrays. If the current version of HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor is upgraded to v5.0, is the Instant-on license activated after the upgrade is complete? Yes. The Instant-on license is available with HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor v5.0.
NOTE: The list should match with the products you have purchased for that specific software title. f. Click Save to obtain a .doc format of the software license certificate. A new browser window appears and contains the license certificate that was shipped to you earlier. Select File >Save As, from the browser window to save the file. You can also email the certificate (word document) as a file attachment to your email account.
What is usable capacity? Is it applicable for XP disk arrays? The usable capacity is applicable only for P9500 disk arrays and calculated as follows: Allocated total LDEVs capacity + unallocated total LDEVs capacity + reserved capacity.
Can purged data be recovered? No. Purged data cannot be recovered, as it is permanently deleted and the free disk space released back to the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor database. If you want to retain a copy of the data that is being purged, archive the data for the duration of your choice before the manual or auto purge process begins. Do the purge and database archival options function the same on the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor database? No.
It depends on the kind of purge that is initiated: • If it is a manual purge and the data being collected falls in the date range older than the date that you have selected for purging, you may see discrepancy in the data being displayed on the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor screens. • If it is a manual purge for an XP or a P9000 disk array, all the data collected till the current collection time is purged.
However, you can first import the v3.5.2 data onto another management station and then upgrade it to v4.0. During the upgrade, can I move or copy the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor database folders to a different location on the same or a different management station? No. HP recommends that the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor database folders remain untouched, as HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor uses the files in these folders for the upgrade to complete.
3. 4. Move the logs in the pa\tomcat\logs folder to another location on the management station. Start the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor services (Start -> Programs -> HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor -> Start services). Is there a procedure to downgrade the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor database? For example, if HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor was upgraded from v3.5.2 to v4.1, can the database be downgraded to v3.5.2? No.
1. 2. At the command prompt, enter cd ...%PADB_HOME%\tools In the Tools folder, enter DBBackup HP recommends that you provide a date for the defining parameter. For example, if you type DBBackup 07102006, the system provides a backup of all data in a directory named 07102006. To restore the SOLID database: 1. At the command prompt, enter cd ...%PADB_HOME%\tools 2. In the Tools folder, enter DBRestore 3.
The HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor services failed to restart, because the JAVA_HOME variable is not updated and it still points to JRE v1.5 Update 18. So, you need to manually update the JAVA_HOME environment variable to point to the JRE v1.6 folder. Then, try restarting the HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor services. Array dashboard and threshold settings NOTE: P9000 disk arrays are supported only from HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor v5.0 onwards.
What does the dashboard high watermark indicate? The high water mark is an indication of the maximum average usage value of that resource in the past 24 hours. High watermark is displayed after considering the usage data of a resource in the last 24 hours for a selected metric. NOTE: The dashboard high watermark is available on the Dashboard screen from HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor v4.5 onwards.
performance data collection is initiated at 9:47 AM for a frequency of 5 minutes, the last collection time stamp is updated only after the 5 minutes completes. I have added a command device from SLPR1. Can I collect information through that command device for LUNs presented through other SLPRs? No. If you add a command device from SLPR1, that command device collects information only for the LUNs presented through SLPR1.
HP XP P9000Watch Real-time charting Through real-time charting, you can view real-time metrics collected for RAID groups or LDEVs that belong to an XP or a P9000 disk array. At a time, you can monitor a maximum of five RAID groups or LDEVs in an XP or a P9000 disk array. I need to monitor response time for a particular RAID group over a shorter duration. Can I collect performance data for less than 60 seconds using HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor? No.
The XP10000 and XP20000 type disk arrays are not displayed under Select Components, as the real-time charting is supported only for XP24000 or XP12000 type disk arrays. Why are ports and DKC not available for selection under Select Components on the RealTimeCharting screen for an XP or a P9000 disk array? The ports and DKC are not available for selection, as real-time data collection and charting is only supported for the LDEVs and RAID groups.
Open the realtime.properties file and provide the new port number against the Port.Number field. • On the management station, the realtime.properties file is located in the %HPSS_HOME%/ pa/properties folder. • On the host agent, the realtime.properties file is located in the xppa/realtime/ config folder. NOTE: From HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor v4.6 onwards, the realtime.properties file is renamed as xprmihaserver.properties. I have updated the new port number in the realtime.
Can I associate my application with resources that belong to legacy XP disk arrays? No. You cannot associate applications with resources belonging to the following legacy XP disk arrays, XP256, XP48, and XP512, because WWNs of the hosts connected to these XP disk arrays are not available. When can an existing application be associated with an existing host? There may be cases, where the LDEVs associated with an application are made available through two hosts belonging to different WWNs.
What metrics should I consider to access the response time of my application? You can look for the performance values of LDEVs, ports, CLPRs, and RAID groups related to the following metrics: LDEV Average read write response time Port IOPS, MBPS, and MP Util% CLPR Cache usage and read hits RAID group RG util%, non seq reads, seq reads, and writes I have performed an OutBand mode of configuration data collection, but I am unable to view any WWN under the Troubleshooting menu in the left pane.

When does the status of an alarm record show up as Close under Level on the Alarms History screen? The status of an alarm record changes to Close when the corresponding alarm record is deleted from the Alarms screen.
Charts NOTE: The following FAQs are on enhancements or new features introduced in Charts from v4.5 onwards. Therefore, these FAQs are not applicable to HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor versions prior to v4.5.

Print, which allows you to print charts in the Chart Work Area as separate pages. By default, all the active or selected charts can be printed. If you want to view their performance graphs in separate chart windows, do the following: 1.
Click Reports. Under the Create/Schedule Reports tab, provide the relevant details and select Favorite Chart(s). From the list of Favorite Chart(s) displayed, select the favorite chart for which you want to generate or schedule a report.
What is the minimum and maximum duration that can be set? You can select a maximum of 7 days. By default, HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor considers a minimum duration of 2 days for the prediction. Can you provide a use case on why it is necessary to predict variations in LDEVs response time? Consider that your application has association with multiple LDEVs and is experiencing slow response time.

I have both HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor and host agent installed on the same Windows system and after upgrading HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor from pre-v4.5 to v5.0, I'm seeing the following error message displayed by the installation wizard.
The reason might be that the Path system variable on your host is not pointing to the location where JRE is installed. Complete the following steps to configure the Path system variable environment variable on your host must point to the installed JRE location. To set the Java PATH, enter the following command in the command prompt window: export PATH=$PATH:/opt/java1.5/bin You can verify whether the Path variable is updated by typing echo %path% in the command prompt window.

Archive performance data for the XP and P9000 disk arrays using the database archival functionality and later import the data back onto the same management station or another management station where HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor is newly installed. Backup the data using the Backup Utility and later restore that data onto the same management station or another management station where HP XP P9000 Performance Advisor is newly installed.
