HP XC System Software Installation Guide Version 3.2.1

2. Notify users in advance that a software upgrade is planned. Because you must shut down
all nodes, plan the upgrade for a time when system activity is at its lightest.
3. Use your preferred backup solution to perform a full backup of the head node, which can
be done while the head node is up and when jobs are running. If the /hptc_cluster file
system is located on an HP SFS server, ensure you back up the SFS server as well.
It can be beneficial to have online access to the contents of the /etc, /opt/hptc, and
/hptc_cluster directories after the upgrade in case you need to look at previous
configuration files for configuration information.
If the upgrade is not successful, you might have to revert to the previously installed release.
4. If you are using LSF, make sure that you save the LSF /hptc_cluster/lsf/conf/
configuration directory. Also save any other known LSF customizations, such as elim
scripts.
5. If the system is using HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share, see the HP SFS documentation
to upgrade the HP SFS server and client software for the new HP XC release, or contact your
local HP SFS support center. Perform the SFS server upgrade first, then perform the HP XC
cluster upgrade.
IMPORTANT: Complete the HP SFS 2.2–1 upgrade before proceeding with the HP XC 3.2.1
upgrade, especially when the /hptc_cluster directory is an HP SFS file system.
Verify the InfiniBand software stack used on the SFS cluster before proceeding with the HP
XC software upgrade.
1. Connect to the HP SFS Admin server as root and run the sfsmgr command.
2. If you want to check the configuration of the HP SFS file system called hptc_cluster,
run the following command:
sfs> show filesystem hptc_cluster
...
Interconnect: o2ib
...
In the above example, the field Interconnect shows the interconnect used.
6. If the system is configured with an InfiniBand interconnect, verify that all HCA cards are
running the minimum required firmware listed in the Version 3.2.1 master firmware list:
http://www.docs.hp.com/en/linuxhpc.html
The InfiniBand firmware binary files are included in the HP SFS 2.2–1 software and are
automatically installed on all SFS nodes. However, the firmware on the HCA adapter must
be upgraded manually, using these firmware binary files.
If you need assistance with identifying and upgrading the firmware on the InfiniBand
switches and HCA adapters, contact your local HP support center.
7. If the system is not configured with improved availability of services, determine whether
you want to configure that feature. Improving the availability of services is a feature that
was introduced in HP XC System Software Version 3.1.
See “Task 9: Plan a Service Availability Strategy” (page 26), which describes what improved
availability offers, how it is achieved, the supported availability tools, and the services that
are eligible for improved availability.
8. Read the Version 3.2.1 HP XC System Software Release Notes before beginning the upgrade
procedure. The release notes describe any last-minute changes to software, firmware, or
hardware that might affect the upgrade process.
The HP XC System Software Release Notes for each HP XC software release are available online:
