HP XC System Software Installation Guide Version 2.1
Enter the number that corresponds to the role or roles you want to
assign to this node. Use a space-separated list to specify multiple roles,
for example,135.Or,enter c to cancel.
Assume you want to add a login role to node n15. Not only do you enter th e number 4,you
must also enter the numbers 1 and 6 to retain the curre nt compute and nat_client roles on
node n15. Basically, you have to supply every role that you want to assign to the node. Thus,
your entry looks like this:
Enter the number that corresponds to the role or roles you want

At this point you have the following options:
• Enter the letter o to accept the role assignm ents you just made.
• Enter the letter r to start the assignment process again. The Reassign Roles option
does not apply the role assignments, it simply allows you to go back to the list of roles and
make adjustments to the role assignments.
• Enter the letter c to cancel the operation and make no changes to the currently assigned
roles.
I.4 Node Role Definitions
Anoderoleisdefinedbytheservicesthatthenodesupplies. Theroleisanabstractionthat
combines one or more services into a g roup. Node roles are characterized as follows:
• Compute
• Login
•I/O
• Management hub
• External
• Node management
• Resource management
• Common
• NAT client
You
can define multiple roles on any node. The head node, in particular, can have all of
th
ese roles if you are setting up a small cluster. Roles provide a co nvenient way of installing
se
rvices on a node.
The default installation defines every node with the compute role, the common role, and the
nat_client role, and all roles except the login role are applied to the head node.
The following sections d efine these roles.
I.4.1 Compute Role
All nod es by default a re defined with th e compute role. It is the administrator’s respo nsibility
to remove this role on a node if it is not wanted or required.
Jobs are distributed an d run on nodes with the compute role. T his role provides the services
required for the nod e to be an allocated resource of the SLURM Central Control Service
(slurmcd).
