HP XC System Software Installation Guide Version 2.1
E.2 Troubleshooting the Discovery Process
This section provides troubleshooting hints to h elp you solve some common problems that may
occur during the discovery process. The following conditions are described:
• ProCurve switches do n ot obtain their IP ad dress ( Sectio n E .2.1)
• ProCurve switches may tak e tim e to ob tain th eir IP addr esses (Sectio n E.2.2)
• All console ports are not discovered (Section E.2.3 )
• All console ports are discovered, however, some have not obtained their IP address after a
reasonable time (Section E.2.4)
• All nodes are not discovered (Section E.2.5)
After performing the suggested corrective action, rerun the discover command.
E.2.1 ProCurve Switches Do Not Obtain Their IP Address
The discovery process requires the correct MA C address of the Root Administration Switch in
order to discover the hardware components in your system. The Root Administration Switch in
an XC system is typically a ProCurve 2 848 or a ProCu rv e 2824.
To determin e wh ich sw itch is the Roo t Ad minist rati on S wi tch, loo k for the swi tch that has th e
head node’s NIC plugged into port 42 (for the Pro C urve 2848) or port 22 (for the ProCurve
2824)oftheswitch.
During the discovery process, do not provide the M AC address of the root con sole switch,
which may have the console port for the head node plugged into port 42, which is typically a
ProCurve 2650 or ProCurve 2626.
If the correct MAC address has b een provided to the discover com mand, and the switch
has not obtained its address, it m ay be n ecessary to reset the ProCurve switch before running
the discover command. At power-up, the ProCurve switch will query the network for an
IP address using DH CP. If a response is not received, the switch continues to query for an
address but at a decreasing rate of frequency.
The discover com mand will wait a max imum of 10 min utes for the P r oCur ve switch to
obtain an address before terminating t he process.
To reset the switch, press the front panel reset button, or log into the switch through the serial
cable and issue the reset command.
E.2.2 ProCurve Switches May Take Time to Get IP Addresses
By default, ProCurve switches are c onfigu red to obtain their IP address using DHCP/Bootp.
If the switch does not receive an address, it continues to periodically send DHC P requests
with decreasing frequency.
The discover process will wait up to 10 minutes for any on e switch to obtain its IP address.
If the discover process times out because it cannot communicate with a switch, reset all the
switches i n the cluster before attempting to run the discover comm and again. This forces the
switches to immediately start sending DHCP requests again.
E.2.3 Not All Console Ports Are Discovered
The discovery process queries th e ProCurve switches to obtain the MAC addresses of all
console p orts. The MAC addresses are logged in the switch as the console port device issues a
DHCP request to get an IP address.
