Before You Begin
This chapter describes the following preinstallation tasks; perform them in the following
sequence:
1. Read related documentation (Section 2.1).
2. Prepare the hardware (Section 2.2).
3. Verify the firmware r evision on the console devices (Section 2.3).
4. Arrange for IP address assignments (Section 2.4).
5. Obtain and save the license key file (Section 2.5).
6. Purchase and l icense additional software products from third-party vendors (Secti on 2.6).
2.1 Task 1: Read Related Documents
Make sure you read the HP XC System Software Release Notes before beginning the installation
procedure. This document describes any last-minute changes to software, firmware, or hardware
that may affect the installation or configuration process.

2.2 Task 2: Prepare the Hardware
Use the information in the HP XC Hardware Prep aration Guide to prepare your hardware. The
connection of n odes to ProCurve switch ports is impo rtant for the au tom atic discovery process.
The HP XC Hardware Preparation Guide describes these connectio ns in detail.
Do not proceed with the software installation process until all hardware preparation tasks are
complete.
2.3 Task 3: Verify Firmware
The HP XC Ha rdware Preparation Guide provides a list of firmware revision dependencies.
Follow the instructions in the accompanying HP Cluster Platform manuals to ensure that all
hardware components are running the latest firmware revision; upgrade it, if necessary.

2.4 Task 4: Arrange for IP Address Assignments and Host
Names
Make arrangements with your site’s netw ork ad ministrato r to assign IP addresses for the
following system componen ts. All IP addresses must be defin ed in your site’s Domain Name
System (DNS) configuration:
The external IP address o f the system , if it is to be connected to an external network. The
name associated with this interface is known as the LVS or cluster alias.
