Overview

manual (Section 1.3)
1.1 How to Use This M anual
This m a nu al is designed to lead yo u through the mandatory installation and con figuratio n
tasks in a predefined sequence. You must perform the tasks described in Chapter 2, Chapter 3,
Chapter 4, and Chapter 5 in sequential order. Chapter 6 describes optional c on figuratio n tasks.
To avoid duplicating information , from time to time y ou may b e req uested to reference
information found in the other manuals in the HP XC System Software Documentation Set.
1.2 Upgrading Your Existing XC System
There is no sup ported upgrade path from HP XC System Software Versions 1.0, 2.0, or 2.0A
to Version 2.1. To up grad e your existing XC system to Version 2.1, you must perform a new
installation and configuration.
If your system is currently running XC Version 1.0, be aware that Version 2.1 offers completely
new and enhanced features, including a simplified network hierarchy, which requires nodes to
be wired differently and different disk requirements. Consult the HP XC Hardware Preparation
Guide for instructions on rew iring your hardware.
Before performing a new installation on any ex isting XC system using th e procedures described
in this manual, H P recommends that you perform the follow ing tasks:
• Back up existing user files and data using the backup processes established at your facility.
• Preserve local user accounts.
1.3 Naming Conventions
Throughout this manual, the following terms are used to d e scrib e a system that is i nstal led with
HP XC System Software:
• XC3000 is the name that is used to describe an HP Cluster Platform 3000 (Intel® Xeon™
with EM64T) on which HP XC System Software is installed.
• XC4000 is the name that is used to describe an HP Cluster Platform 4000 (AMD
Opteron™) on which HP XC System Software is installed.
• XC6000 is the name that is used to describe an HP Cluster Platform 6000 (Intel Itanium®)
on which HP XC System Software is installed.
Table 1-1 lists the naming conventions and sample IP addresses used in this manual. You
are free to cho ose your own nam es.
