HP XC System Software Administration Guide Version 2.1
Client nodes synchronize to the golden client by
way of distribution of the golden image.
When you use the updateclient command to update nodes with a new golden image, only
files that have changed in the golden image between the current in stallation and the new image
are distributed; this saves time and network bandwidth.
This chapter describes the management of the im age replication and distribution environ men t,
and how it can be used to distribute software (including configuration changes) to all cluster
nodes. The b asic procedure is as follows:
1. Install software or modify files on the golden client (Section 7.2).
2. Update the golden image (Section 7.3).
3. Distribute the golden image or individual
files to the client nodes (Section 7.4).
7.2 Adding Software or Modifying Files
on the Golden Client
The first step in managin g software changes to your HP XC system should be to update the
golden client node. This m a y involve a d ding new software packages, adding a new user, or
modifying a configuration file that is replicated across the HP XC system, such as a NIS or
NTP configuration file.
_________________________ Note _________________________
It is important to have a consisten
t proced ure f or m anaging software upd ates an d
changes to your HP XC system.
If you need to add a software package or service configuration file to the golden c lien t that
should not be distributed to all nodes, be sure to prevent these files from becoming part of th e
golden image by using exclusion file. See Section 7 .3.3 for further details.
If the package or service configuration file is specific to the head node and it is not to be
distributed to any other individual node, then making the change on the golden client a nd
excluding the file from being included in the golden image is sufficient. However, if the
software package or configuration file is destined for a han dfu l of (specialized) nodes in the HP
XC system, then a procedu re is required to distribute these changes to those nodes. There are
two methods to accomplish this:
• By using file overrides to t
he golden image (Section 7.2.2)
• By using per-node service configura tion scripts (Section 7.2.3)
7.2.1 Installing Additional RPMs from the Installation DVD
Use the following procedure to install additional RPMs from the Installatio n DV D:
1. Loginasthesuperuseront
he head node.
2. Insert the Installation DVD into the DVD d rive.
3. Mount the D VD on the default l ocation:
# mount /dev/cdrom
4. Change to the /mnt/cdrom/LNXHPC/RPMS directory.
5. Locate the RPM you want to install and issue the rpm command to install it; for exam ple:
# rpm -ivh kde-i18n-Fren
ch-3.1.3-1.noarch.rpm
Section 7.3 discusses h ow to update the golden image with the new software for subsequ ent
distributiontoclientnodes.
