1.1 Understanding Nodes, Roles, and Services
The HP XC system consists of ind ividual n odes that sup ply vario us services.
In this manual, a node is described based on the service it provides. Thus, management services
are hosted on a management hub node. Usually a node provides multiple services, so it can be
known by multiple nam es. A role is defined as an aggregate of related services.
_________________________ Note _________________________
Perform all system administrat
ion from the n ode that p ro vid es the app ropriate
service, usually the head nod
e.
The head node is the node tha t i s installed first. The head node is established with the alias
nh during in stallation . You can use this alias in command lines when you w ant to designate
the head no de.
In some con fig uratio ns the managem ent hub may be the head node; in other configurations,
they are two different nodes.
Other nodes are assigned se
rvices; examples are listed here:
• Compute
Compute nodes run the Simple Linux Utility for Resource Management (SLURM) that
enables them to launch, monitor, and control jobs.
By default, all n odes in th
e system are compute n odes.
• SLURM Central Control Daemon Service
The node that provides this service runs the daemon for the SLURM central control.
