Glossary
A
Administrative Network
The private network within the XC system that is used for administr ative operatio ns.
admin branch
The half (branch) of the Adm in istrative Network that contains all of the general-purpose admin
ports t o the nodes of the XC system.
B
base image
The collection of files and directories that represents the common files and configuration data
thatareappliedtoallnodesinanXCsystem.
branch switch
A component of the Adm inistrative Network. A switch that is up lin ked to the root switch and
receives physical connections from multiple nodes.
C
cluster
A set of independent computers combined into a unified system through system software and
networking technologies.
cluster alias
The ex ternal cluster host name supported by LVS, which enables inbound connectio ns without
having to know individual nodes names to connect and log in to the XC system.
Console Branch
A c omponent of the Admin istr ative Network. The ha lf (branch ) of the Adminis trat ive Network
that contains all of the console ports o f the nodes of the XC sy stem. This branch is established
as a separate branch to enable some level of partition ing of the Administrative Network to
support specific security needs.

DHCP
Dynamic Host Control Protocol. A protocol that d ynamically allocates IP addresses to
computers on a local area network.

EFI
Extensible Firmware Interface. D efines a m odel for the interface between operating systems
and I tanium -based platform firmware. The interface consists of data tables that contain
platform-related information, plus boot and run-time service calls th at are available to the
operating system and its loade r. Together, these provide a standard env ironment for booting an
operating system and run n in g preboot application s .
