HP VMA SAN Gateway Software Update Guide
1 Updating the VMA SAN Gateway software
The VMA SAN Gateway runs a special purpose Operating Environment (OE), which when deployed
on the DL380 server creates a storage controller for connection of the VMA-series Memory Arrays,
VMA3205 and VMA3210. The VMA SAN Gateway provides Fibre Channel target port access
to connected VMA Arrays. The special purpose OE that runs on the VMA SAN Gateway is updated
as a full image update versus updating or patching parts of the OE. This is not an online process
and the gateway must be rebooted for the new image update to be activated.
Overview
The update process of the VMA SAN Gateway is easy and straight forward. There are two primary
methods available for updating the gateway which this update process guide describes. Both
methods have the same base process flow as follows:
1. Checking the current OE version running on the VMA SAN Gateway.
2. Downloading the VMA SAN Gateway update image (.img file) from the HP Support page.
3. Uploading the update image file to the VMA SAN Gateway.
4. Performing a Gateway OE Update operation on the gateway.
5. Verifying the new OE image is active after the gateway reboots .
Updating methods
There are two primary methods available to perform an update of the VMA SAN Gateway OE
software:
1. Using the gateway CLI method using a USB Flash drive to upload the update image“Using
the gateway CLI and a USB flash drive” (page 5), or
2. Using the web interface using a web server to download the update image“Using a web
interface and a web server” (page 11)
Select the method desired and go to the chapter for process details.
WARNING! The VMA SAN Gateway software update process requires a reboot of the gateway.
Data access through this gateway will be temporarily disrupted while the gateway is rebooting.
CAUTION: As with any storage device maintenance, HP strongly recommends that you perform
a backup of the VMA SAN Gateway configuration file before updating the gateway software OE
or performing any maintenance or reconfiguration of the gateway.
For more information on backup and recovery of the gateway configuration file, see the HP VMA
SAN Gateway for VMA-series Memory Arrays Release Notes and the HP VMA-Series SAN Gateway
Installation and User Guide on the HP website at www.hp.com/go/vma-docs.
