Welcome to HP-UX Virtual Partitions! This booklet provides a brief overview of the product HP-UX Virtual Partitions (vPars), outlines the contents of the HP-UX Virtual Partitions media box, describes the steps to access the CD, and discusses information you should read about before you install. You can view the latest version of this document and other vPars documentation from the web at: http://docs.hp.com/hpux/11i/index.
What is vPars? The vPars (Virtual Partitions) product allows you to run multiple instances of HP-UX simultaneously on one server or nPartition by dividing a server or nPartition into virtual partitions. Each virtual partition is assigned its own subset of hardware, runs a separate instance of HP-UX, and hosts its own set of applications. Because each HP-UX instance is isolated from all other instances, vPars provides application and OS (Operating System) fault isolation.

Installation Instructions The supported methods of installing vPars are: • • Software Distributor (SD) Ignite-UX For installation instructions, see Installing and Managing HPUX Virtual Partitions, available on this CD or from the web. On the vPars CD, see the file at: DOCS/T1335A/vparsguide.pdf From the web, go to: http://docs.hp.com/hpux/11i/index.
Configuration and Licensing Information Please read the document HP-UX Ordering and Configuration Guide. This document contains information on the required licensing for the vPars product as well as licensing for other products, such as HP-UX 11i Operating Environments (OEs), on a computer using virtual partitions. The document also contains the latest information on supported hardware, specifically I/O cards and I/O devices. To access this document, go to: http://docs.hp.com/hpux/11i/index.
Additional Product Interactions In addition to the product interactions listed in Installing and Managing HP-UX Virtual Partitions (vPars), please note the following additions: • Partition Manager Partition Manager (parmgr) version B.11.11.01.05 or later is required for installation of the vPars product. This is true on both nPartition-able servers as well as nonnPartitionable servers (rp7400/N4000 and rp5470/L3000). It is normal to have this product installed on nonnPartitionable servers.
B.11.11.07.16. The correct equivalent OnlineDiag version is B.11.11.07.23. Also, when using cstm’s info command, information is shown only for the processors that are currently owned by the virtual partition from which the info command is run (in other words, only the bound and unbound CPUs that are currently assigned to the virtual partition). For the unbound CPUs which are not assigned to the virtual partition, the information is displayed as N/A.
