Welcome to HP-UX Virtual Partitions! This booklet provides a brief overview of the product HP-UX Virtual Partitions (vPars), outlines the contents of the HP-UX Virtual Partitions media box, describes the steps to access the CD, and discusses information you should read about before you install. You can view the latest version of this document and other vPars documentation from the web at: http://docs.hp.com/hpux/11i/index.
What is vPars? The vPars (Virtual Partitions) product allows you to run multiple instances of HP-UX simultaneously on one computer by dividing the computer into virtual partitions. Each partition is assigned its own subset of hardware, runs a separate instance of HP-UX, and hosts its own set of applications. Because each HP-UX instance is isolated from all other instances, vPars provides application and OS (Operating System) fault isolation.
Media Box Contents The HP-UX Virtual Partitions media box includes the following: • Read Before Installing HP-UX Virtual Partitions (this CD booklet) — Use this to get a brief description of HP-UX Virtual Partitions, the contents of this media box, steps on how to access the CD, and information you should read before installing vPars.
Mounting the CD 1. Login in as root. 2. Mount the CD to the desired directory. The following example uses the /cdrom directory: # mount -r /dev/dsk/c1t2d0 /cdrom You can find your specific cdrom device file by using the command ioscan -fnC disk.
Installation Instructions The supported methods of installing vPars are: • • Software Distributor (SD) Ignite-UX For installation instructions, see Installing and Managing HPUX Virtual Partitions, available on this CD or from the web. On the vPars CD, see the file at: DOCS/T1335A/vparsguide.pdf From the web, go to: http://docs.hp.com/hpux/11i/index.
Configuration and Licensing Information Please read the document HP-UX Ordering and Configuration Guide. This document contains information on the required licensing for the vPars product as well as licensing for other products, such as HP-UX 11i Operating Environments (OEs), on a computer using virtual partitions. The document also contains the latest information on supported hardware, specifically I/O cards and I/O devices. To access this document, go to: http://docs.hp.com/hpux/11i/index.
Additional Product Interactions In addition to the product interactions listed in Installing and Managing HP-UX Virtual Partitions (vPars), please note the following additions: • JFS (Journal File System) To avoid hangs on vxfs file systems, please install kernel patch PHKL_25022 on the operating systems of each virtual partition. This patch is available from the IT Resource Center web site at: http://itrc.hp.
• Ignite-UX and other Curses Applications On a virtual console, when using applications that use curses, such as the terminal versions of Ignite-UX and SAM, do not press Ctrl-A to toggle to the console display window of another partition while you are still within the curses application. This is especially applicable when you are using vparboot -I and the Ignite-UX application to install vPars.
Known Problems Lost Console Input Description: There is one known case where the virtual console will ignore keyboard input (data sent to the console continues to be displayed; only keyboard input is ignored). The suggested workaround below is only available when at least one other virtual partition is accessible. Otherwise, you must reboot the computer in order to regain console input.
• From a running partition, boot the partition that owns the hardware console port by executing vparboot -p target_partition, where target_partition is the partition that owns the hardware console port. Glance and MeasureWare Network Metrics Description: When running Glance or MeasureWare on a vPars computer, Glance and MeasureWare no longer show network metrics with patch PHNE_24211 installed. This can be fixed by installing cumulative ARPA transport patch PHNE_25642 or its successor.
Solution: Install cumulative ARPA transport patch PHNE_25642 or its successor. Patches can be obtained from the IT Resource Center at: http://itrc.hp.com WINSTALL_script and Ignite-UX Description: The WINSTALL_script included on the CD is set to work with only Ignite-UX version B.3.4.115 (September 2001). Previous versions of Ignite-UX are not supported with vPars. Successor versions B.3.5.
# Initializing... # Contacting target "rust"... # # Target: rust:/ # Ignite-UX.FILE-SRV-11-11 B.3.5.89 then your Ignite-UX version is B.3.5.89. WINSTALL is a bootable kernel used by Ignite-UX during installation and recovery of a virtual partition. WINSTALL_script copies a vPars-compatible WINSTALL to the correct location on the Ignite-UX server.
ERROR: The vPars-compatible Ignite-UX boot kernel must only be used with the fileset Ignite-UX.FILE-SRV-11-11 revision B.3.4.115. This fileset revision is not installed. ERROR: The vPars-compatible Ignite-UX boot kernel must only be used with the fileset Ignite-UX.BOOT-KERNEL revision B.3.4.115. This fileset revision is not installed. Solution: Go to HPs software depot for the WINSTALL software: http://software.hp.
