HP-UX Virtual Partitions Release Notes (A.03.05)

NOTE: If you are installing iCAP on an HP-UX 11i v1 vPars system, and wish to update
to vPars A.03.05, or configure a mixed 11i v1/v2 vPars environment, you must install iCAP
version 8.03 (B.11.11.08.03.00) on each HP–UX 11i v1 virtual partition. This will also install
the required versions of WBEM and NParProvider and necessary patches.
Installing iCAP 8.03 onto an HP–UX 11i v1 system running versions of vPars prior to A.03.05
will exhibit an error message which can be ignored, and you can proceed with updating the
vPars software. After the vPars installation (which includes halting every virtual partition
and rebooting the nPartition to the new vPars A.04.05 Monitor), you must go to each HP–UX
11i v1 virtual partition and run the command swconfig -v B9073BA to complete the
iCAP installation.
vPars A.03.05 supports HP Global Workload Manager (gWLM) with the following restrictions.
— gWLM A.03.x does not support processor sets (Psets) nested under vPars A.03.xx.
gWLM invalidates this with vPars versions up to and including vPars A.03.04, but fails
to invalidate such an attempt with vPars A.03.05.
Workaround: Do not nest Psets under vPars A.03.05.
gWLM is designed to not migrate cell-local processors (CLPs). gWLM reads information
from virtual partitions to determine how many processors it can migrate. When vPars
A.03.05 is used in a mixed HP-UX 11i v1/v2 vPars environment with CLPs, the
information about CLPs is not accurately conveyed. This can restrict borrowing and
potentially disrupt partial cluster management. The symptom of this issue is the
following log message:
FINE: expected 1 boot CPU but counted <N>
Workaround: Do not assign CLPs to any of the virtual partitions.
Compatibility and Installation Requirements
This section describes the compatibility information and installation requirements for this release.
For specific installation instructions, see the HP-UX Virtual Partitions Administrator's Guide.
vPars Checklist
This section is a brief checklist of common but significant items you should check while setting
up vPars.
Firmware Checklist
Check Server Firmware: Check the HP-UX Virtual Partitions Ordering and Configuration
Guide for the required server firmware.
For the non-nPartition-able systems, firmware upgrades must be done outside of the vPars
environment (in standalone mode).
For nPartition-able systems, call your HP Support Representative.
Networking and I/O Card Firmware: Check the HP-UX Virtual Partitions Ordering and
Configuration Guide for the required I/O card firmware.
You should also check the firmware on new I/O cards, because they may not be updated
with the firmware required for vPars.
Virtual Partition Checklist
Each virtual partition requires a minimum of:
At least one CPU
Its own boot disk
