A Guide to Migrate Hardware Diagnostics from EMS to WBEM-Based Solution

Introduction to WBEM-Based Hardware Diagnostics Solution
The WBEM-based hardware diagnostics solution includes the System Fault Management (SFM)
software and WBEM providers. SFM is a collection of tools used to monitor the health of HP servers
running HP-UX. It retrieves information about a system’s hardware devices such as CPU, memory,
power supply, and cooling devices. It operates within the WBEM environment, an industry-wide
standards-based initiative to aid the management of large scale systems. HP System Management
Homepage (HP SMH) is the user interface to SFM functionality on the local and remote system. It
can display hardware properties and error logs, and provide other functionality which was formerly
part of STM and EMS. To launch HP SMH GUI, enter the following in the address bar of the Web
browser: http://<hostname>:2301 where <hostname> is the hostname of your system. If the
system does not respond, view hpsmh manpage. See "man hpsmh(1M)". The HP System Insight
Manager (HP SIM) multi-system management product also makes use of SFM. To launch HP SIM,
enter the following in the address bar of the Web browser: http://<systemname>:<portnumber>/
where <systemname> is the name of the Central Management Server.
SFM uses the Common Information Model Object Manager (CIMOM) WBEM service to route
query requests and responses between WBEM providers and clients. SFM includes instance and
indication providers, which are one set of WBEM providers among many. Apart from SFM providers,
the WBEM-based hardware monitoring solution include other WBEM providers, such as indication
and instance providers for direct attach storage and IO devices. The SFM and WBEM providers
query and provide system hardware property and event information.

Migration Overview
Starting with the HP-UX 11i v3 March 2009 release, OnlineDiag will be in the obsolescence mode
on the following HP servers:
HP 9000 servers
Intel® Itanium® Montvale processor-based HP Integrity servers and earlier
HP will address only the critical and serious defects raised in OnlineDiag.
OnlineDiag is discontinued on all new servers beyond the Intel® Itanium® Montvale processor-based
HP Integrity servers. To plan for OnlineDiag discontinuance, you must migrate from the EMS &
STM based hardware diagnostics solution to the WBEM-based hardware diagnostics solution.
New features and enhancements to server hardware diagnostics will be available only on
WBEM-based hardware diagnostics solution and not on EMS & STM based hardware diagnostics
solution. Therefore, HP recommends that you use the WBEM-based hardware diagnostics solution
for monitoring the health of the HP-UX systems.
