A Guide to Migrate Hardware Diagnostics from EMS to WBEM-Based Solution
Glossary
CIM Common Information Model. An object-based model for describing managed resources. CIM
uses the object-oriented paradigm, where managed objects are modeled using the concepts of
classes and instances.
CIMOM Common Information Model Object Manager. The component of WBEM that manages the
interaction between the providers and other modules in the WBEM environment. CIMOM manages
CIM objects. It receives and processes CIM operation requests and issues responses.
DMTF Distributed Management Task Force. An industry organization involved in the development,
adoption, and interoperability of management standards and initiatives for enterprise and Internet
environments.
EMS Event Monitoring Service. It is an application framework used for monitoring system resources
on HP-UX 10.20 and 11.x.
EMS Hardware
Monitors
Daemons that proactively monitor hardware devices, such as CPU, memory, and hard disks.
EMT Error Management Technology. A user component that enables you to obtain information about
errors generated on an HP-UX 11i v3 system.
event An alert generated when an unusual activity is detected on a monitored hardware device.
event viewer A component of EVWEB used to view indications present in the Event Archive.
EVWEB User component that enables administering and viewing the WBEM indications generated on
the system on which SFM is installed. EVWEB provides command line (evweb(1)) interface and
is also integrated into the HP SMH GUI.
HP RSP HP Remote Support Pack. Provides proactive remote monitoring, diagnostics, and troubleshooting
to help improve the availability of HP-supported servers and storage systems in your data center.
HP SIM HP Systems Insight Manager. HP's management application installed on the CMS that uses WBEM
instrumentation on operating systems such as HP-UX, Linux, and Windows.
HP SMH HP System Management Homepage. HP's management application installed on the local system
that uses WBEM instrumentation on operating systems such as HP-UX, Linux, and Windows.
To launch HP SMH GUI, enter the following in the address bar of the Web browser: http://
<hostname>:2301 where <hostname> is the hostname of your system. If the system does not
respond, view hpsmh manpage. See "man hpsmh(1M)"
indication An alert or a warning about the failure of a monitored hardware device. It is equivalent to an
event in the Event Monitoring Service (EMS) framework.
indication provider It translates events generated by the Event Monitoring Service (EMS) monitors into WBEM
indications, and reports them to the CIMOM.
instance A representation of the actual physical object that belongs to a class.
instance provider It provides information about devices, such as model number and serial number of a CPU. In the
Support Tools Manager (STM), this functionality is accomplished by Information (Info) Tools.
managed resource A hardware device that is monitored.
Online Diagnostics A collection of tools that enables you to monitor and test server hardware.
OnlineDiag The name of the bundle that includes the Online Diagnostics software.
Provider Services
Base
The Provider Services Base product that offers interface for user space processes (typically, but
not limited to, WBEM Indication Providers) to retrieve error logs from HP-UX Kernel.
ProviderSvcsBase The name of the bundle that includes the Provider Services Base software.
SFM System Fault Management. The SFM software is a next generation solution that is used to monitor
the health of HP servers running HP-UX 11i v1 and above.
STM Support Tools Manager. A component of Online Diagnostics that manages a collection of support
tools that you can use to verify and troubleshoot system hardware.
SysFaultMgmt The name of the bundle that includes the SFM software. It is also the product number of the SFM
software available on the Software Depot.
