General Q1: What is SWA? Software Assistant (SWA) is a command line tool for analyzing an HP-UX system’s patch state as well as identifying applicable security bulletins. It is available from http://www.hp.com/go/swa. Q2: What versions of HP-UX are supported by SWA? SWA can run on HP-UX 11i v1 (11.11) and later releases. Remote analysis of HP-UX systems adds support for HP-UX 11.00 in addition to any HP-UX 11i release.
Installation How do you install SWA? Once a depot containing SWA is downloaded or mounted to the system, installation can be performed using the command # swinstall –s SwAssistant If the SWA installation fails, review the messages found in /var/adm/sw/swagent.log. How do you install SWA for use with HP SIM? The standard installation includes configuring SWA within HP SIM, if it is present.
Analyzers What is an SWA analyzer? The analysis functionality of SWA is divided into a set of analyzers. This allows you to control the scope of the analysis and limit the number of recommended actions. What are the default analyzers? If no analyzers are explicitly selected, the QPK (Quality Pack update), PCW (Installed patch with critical warning) and SEC (security bulletin) analyzers are used.
Reports What is the default report generated by SWA? The default report is the Action report. What is the Action report? The Action report is the “to do” list generated to resolve the issues identified by the selected analyzers. It will include all patch dependencies needed to install the required patches on any system. Each report includes a section for required patch bundles, patches, and manual actions.
Networking Does SWA use an internet connection? SWA relies on a catalog file that provides information on all known issues and resolutions for the supported releases. SWA may also be used to download patches and patch bundles into an installation-ready depot. Can I use proxies with SWA? SWA provides mechanisms to specify proxies via options, environment variables, and configuration files.
Command Line Options How can I easily find the command line options? The option “-?” may be used at any level of the command line. Use “swa -?” to list the supported major modes, “swa report -?” will list the options available to the report major mode, and “swa get –x -?” will list the extended option available to the get major mode. Each swa major mode has a dedicated man page. References to these pages can be found in the “See Also” section of the main swa(1m) page.
HP SIM/Multi-system analysis How many systems can I analyze with SWA and HP SIM? SWA can only analyze a single system at a time, but supports analyzing remote systems, allowing for multiple systems to be managed from a single instance of SWA. When SWA is used within HP SIM, multiple systems can be analyzed using a single operation with summarized results. The C.02.26 release of SWA supports analysis of 100 systems.
