HP-UX SNAplus2 R7 General Information
Introducing SNAplus2
Benefits Provided by SNAplus2
You can have one or more separate SNAplus2 domains on the same physical network, using a unique name for each
different domain. A single SNAplus2 domain can correspond to a TCP/IP subnet, can be part of a TCP/IP subnet
(so that there are two or more separate SNAplus2 domains in the same subnet), or can span multiple subnets.
If the SNAplus2 domain has multiple servers, one server holds the master copy of the SNAplus2 configuration.
This server is known as the master server. Other servers on the LAN can be identified as backup servers. The
configuration is copied to backup servers—either when they are started, or when the master copy is changed—so
that all backup servers hold a copy of the latest information.
HP-UX Clients
A client computer does not contain an SNA node; it holds only the information it needs to access servers on the
SNAplus2 LAN, and relies on a server to provide the necessary configuration information.
Most of the details of using HP-UX clients are the same as those for a server, except that the client has no node
resources to define and manage.
Windows Clients
SNAplus2 enables machines running Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows 3.1,
or Windows for Workgroups 3.11to act as clients in the SNAplus2 domain.
SNAplus2 provides API support for Windows clients. The following APIs are supported:
• FMI (used by 3270 emulation programs)
• APPC
• CPI-C
• LUA
• CSV
All of these APIs are binary compatible with the WOSA APIs used by Microsoft SNA Server, so third-party
applications supported by SNA Server (for example, 3270 emulation programs such as Attachmate Extra, NetSoft
Dynacom Elite, and Wall Data Rumba) are also supported by SNAplus2 Windows clients.
For more information about managing Windows clients, refer to
HP-UX SNAplus2 Administration Guide. For infor-
mation about Windows SNA APIs, refer to HP-UX SNAplus2 Administration Guide or your Windows SNA product
documentation.
2.3 Benefits Provided by SNAplus2
SNAplus2 provides features and benefits that range from simplifying configuration and improving problem diagnosis
to enhancing network performance.
2.3.1 Easy Migration
When upgrading an older version of SNAplus2 to a newer version, you can preserve your present system
configuration by using the SNAplus2 migration utilities. The migration utilities support all of the earlier versions
of SNAplus2.
Migration involves converting configuration files from older versions of SNAplus2 into a format that the current
version of SNAplus2 can use. The migration procedure is described in detail in HP-UX SNAplus2 Migration Guide.
2.3.2 Easy Configuration
SNAplus2 is designed with configuration options and administration facilities that reduce configuration time and
network complexity. For example:
