STM: Tutorial
(Be sure the DISPLAY variable for XWindows is set. For example:
export DISPLAY=my_workstation.cup.hp.com
Menu User Interface (mstm) - runs on non-graphics HP terminals and provides menu-driven access to your
system devices and STM's tools. To start mstm, enter:
/usr/sbin/mstm
or
/usr/sbin/stm/ui/bin/stm -m
Command Line User Interface (cstm) - runs on non-graphics terminals and allows the user to create and run
scripts to simplify the system management process. To start cstm, enter:
/usr/sbin/cstm
or
/usr/sbin/stm/ui/bin/stm -c
STM Tutorial: Start STM under MPE/iX
There are three steps to take to begin running STM under MPE/iX:
1. Log on to an account that has PH (Process Handling) capability.
2. Check to see if STM is installed on your system.
3. Start STM with the desired user interface.
First, log on to account that has PH capability
In order to run STM, you must be logged on to an account that has Process Handling (PH) capability. This capabiliity
can be assigned to an account by the system administrator.
Next, check to see if STM is installed on your system:
Enter the following command: cstm
The message "--Information-- Support Tools Manager" should appear on your screen, indicating that STM is
installed on your system.
If this does not appear, STM is not installed. Remember, STM is only supported on MPE/iX 6.5 and later. Also, STM
requires that networking be configured and enabled for remote access. See STM Dependencies on MPE/iX
for details.
Start STM with the desired user interfaces:
On MPE/iX, the HP Support Tool Manager can be accessed through either of two user interfaces. Choose the interface
appropriate for your needs, preferences, and resources. All functionality exists in both interfaces.
Command Line User Interface (cstm) - runs on non-graphics terminals and allows the user to create and run
scripts to simplify the system management process. To start STM with this interface, enter:
cstm
Menu User Interface (mstm) - runs on non-graphics HP terminals and provides menu-driven access to your
system devices and STM's tools. To start STM with this interface, enter:
mstm
The cstm and mstm commands are located in pub.sys.
Note: An early version of the mstm (menu) interface is included with MPE/iX 6.5. At this time, we recommend you
use cstm rather than mstm
Limited testing reveals that mstm works correctly in some configurations, but not in others. The configurations that
appear to work correctly are remote connections (for example: terminals on a system or a PC running Reflections). In
contrast, hardwired system consoles have interface problems, such as soft keys not working. If you try mstm and run
