Roles and work flow
There are three basic roles associated with the use of SPM. The roles, their primary tasks, and the
order in which tasks are performed are as follows:
1. The storage architect first configures the catalog and imports storage resources into the catalog.
See “Configuring the storage catalog” on page 15 and
“Importing storage into the storage catalog” on page 25.
2. The server administrator then uses HP Insight Dynamics to create storage service requests. HP
Insight Dynamics allows the server administrator to browse and select storage from the catalog
that matches the requirements specified in the storage request. Storage requests can also be
created and modified in SPM. See “Creating a service request” on page 48.
3. The storage administrator performs basic catalog monitoring and maintenance tasks. See
“Monitoring the storage catalog” on page 33 and
“Managing storage catalog entities” on page 37.
After SPM is configured and goals are fulfilled, each role becomes active as catalog conditions require.
For example, it may become necessary to consult the storage architect as the system grows. Monitoring,
maintenance, and creating service requests are ongoing. See Interactions between the server
administrator, storage architect, and storage administrator for the interactions between the three roles.
