Platform Support Remarks
This
vparcreate describes functionality on systems not running Onboard Administrator (OA)
based partition management. For vparcreate on systems with OA based partition management,
refer to vparcreate2 (1M) by typing man vparcreate2
.
DESCRIPTION
The
vparcreate command creates a new virtual partition (vPar) using the specified hardware
resources. vp_name is a symbolic name for the virtual partition and must be used in all references to it.
If the -D option is specified, the vPar is created in db_file. Otherwise it is created in the vPar monitor
database. In either case, a vPar named vp_name must not already exist in the database. Any error ter-
minates the command without creating a virtual partition except if the command was terminated because
the vPars database lock was unavailable. In this case, any changes made till the point of the error (work-
ing left-to-right on the command line) will remain. Run
vparremove before retrying.
In certain scenarios, the command may not be able to validate if the chosen memory granularities are
appropriate for the system. The command will display a warning message. In such cases, the user should
validate the granularities against the total memory on the system and the supported number of memory
granules on the system. Refer to vparresources(5) manpage for more details.
Note: Older versions of the vparcreate and vparmodify commands allowed specification of IO
resources using the legacy hardware path only (see intro (7)). Starting with the A.05.03 version of the
Virtual Partitions product, agile (lunpath) hardware paths are also supported. This functionality means
that you can now create a virtual partition with legacy mode disabled (see insf(1M) and rmsf (1M)), but
only if all virtual partitions have been updated to A.05.03 or later.
Note that the mixing of legacy and agile hardware paths within one vPar is not recommended. This com-
mand cannot detect when a legacy hardware path and an agile hardware path identify the same device.
Options
No option except
-a (add resource) and -g (memory granularity) may be specified more than once. The
-g option may be specified at most once for each memtype . Resources allocated with the
-a option must
be available, that is, not already allocated to a virtual partition, nor exceeding the overall limits of the
resources. Some CPU resources have special requirements; these are described following Table 1. All
CPUs to be added to the new vPar must be fully licensed. Resources assigned with multiple
-a options
must not conflict. Violation of any condition is a command error.
The
vparcreate command recognizes the following command line options and arguments:
-p vp_name Specifies the symbolic name of the vPar. The name can consist of alpha-numeric char-
acters A-Z, a-z, 0-9, the underbar character (_), and the period (.). The maximum
length of the name is 239 characters. Required.
-B boot_attr Specifies the autoboot and autosearch attribute of the vPar. boot_attr can have the fol-
lowing case-insensitive values:
auto Sets the autoboot attribute. If the autoboot attribute is set to auto, the
vPar is rebooted following a successful vparreset command or when
the monitor is first loaded, if appropriate monitor options have been
specified.
manual Clears the autoboot and autosearch attributes. If the attribute is set to
manual, the vPar halts after a vparreset, and does not boot when the
monitor is loaded. It must then be booted manually with the vparboot
command.
search Sets the autosearch attribute. If the autosearch attribute is set to
search, then the combination of autoboot (auto) and autosearch
(search) decides the boot action to be taken. The interpretation of auto-
boot and autosearch has changed for systems that support hardware
