NAME
parspec - description of partition specification
DESCRIPTION
Platforms that have Onboard Administrator (OA) based partition management support partition
specifications or
parspecs.A
parspec is a collection of data that defines the configuration of a specific
nPartition, including the virtual partitions in the nPartition if the customer has defined any virtual parti-
tions.
You may use the
parspec functionality to do the following:
Save nPartition and virtual partition configurations.
Modify configurations.
Create partitions.
The following are the key features of
parspecs
.
Every
parspec defines only one nPartition.
Multiple nPartitions must be described in multiple
parspecs.
A nPartition can be created from a specified
parspec.
Every nPartition that exists has a
parspec associated with it (referred to as a current parspec),
and there can be only one current
parspec for a given nPartition.
Any
parspec not associated with an existing nPartition is an alternate
parspec.
Every
parspec has a unique name (scope of uniqueness in a complex).
Parspecs can be managed through the partition commands.
The vPar database resides within a
parspec.
Parspecs are stored on the OA.
nPartition Commands and parspec
Parspecs are handled with the following nPartition commands and options.
When creating a new nPartition using an existing alternate
parspec, use: parcreate -Z
parspec_name.
An alternate
parspec can be created using: parcreate -C parspec_name.
The
parspec of the current partition (both nPartition and any virtual partitions defined in it) can be
saved via: parmodify -c parspec_name.
The
parstatus -z command lists all parspecs or those of specified nPartitions. The
par-
status -Z shows the content of the specified parspec.
Parspecs are removed with the parremove -Z command.
Refer to these manpages for more information. See EXAMPLES below for sample usages.
Current Parspec Restrictions
Since current
parspecs maintain the configuration information of existing nPartitions, they cannot be
modified using the options intended for use on alternate parspecs. For example, the -Z option of the
parmodify command cannot be used on a current parspec.
Note that
parspecs are only supported for systems with Onboard Administrator (OA) based partition
management.
Parspec Change Policy
Though the concept of "parspecs" itself is a new feature, the ability for a partition controller to modify
configurations without user intervention is not new. With this in mind, it is worthwhile to mention more
about the parspec change policy.
The "parspec change policy" is an attribute of an nPartition which the user can enable or disable. By
default, it is enabled. The parspec change policy determines whether the OA can automatically modify a
parspec in order to successfully perform a partition operation (such as activating an nPartition). In some
scenarios, it is possible that the system cannot meet the customer requested resource or attribute
specifications in the parspec for an nPartition or virtual partition. This could be due to non-existent
resources or degraded resources, or other restrictions in hardware architecture. Under these cir-
cumstances, the partition configuration in the parspec may need to be modified to make forward progress.
