LDAP-UX Integration Performance and Tuning Guidelines
Audience
This document is intended for HP-UX system administrators as well as enterprise directory architects. Readers of
this document are expected to have a good understanding of Unix style operating systems, fundamental networking
knowledge as well as a good understanding of LDAP directory server administration. Additional recommended

Introduction
This document can be used to determine how many LDAP-UX clients that can be supported by an LDAP directory
server. It helps provide guidance on the performance requirements of the LDAP-UX Integration product on the
LDAP directory server by describing the performance characteristics of the LDAP-UX Integration Client product.
A quick estimate on number of LDAP-UX clients than can generally be supported by a typical LDAP server is
provided below in the Quick Summary.
Quick Summary
Demands of the LDAP-UX Integration product upon the LDAP directory server can vary greatly, depending largely
on the following three factors:
1. The configuration of the client systems (which name services are used)
2. The type of applications used on those clients
3. The configuration of the ldapclientd cache daemon
4. The general level of activity on those clients
Understanding these factors is critical to effectively estimating server requirements. This document describes those
factors in greater detail.
Table 1 provides the approximate number of clients (systems) that can be supported on an LDAP directory server.
The table below assumes the server is running HP-UX .11.00 with the November 1999 general release patch bundle
(which includes many TCP performance enhancements.) The table also assumes that the LDAP server is dedicated
to support LDAP-UX clients.
