RHDS Red Hat Directory Server.
SLAPD Standalone LDAP Daemon. The University of Michigan standalone implementation of LDAP,
without the need for an X.500 directory.
SRV Service Record. A service record defined in an RFC that specifies information about available
services.
SSL Secure Socket Layer. A cryptographic protocol that provides a secure connection between a
server and client over the network. By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection include
an “s” at the end of the protocol or service name, such as https: instead of http: or ldaps:
instead of ldap:.
TLS supersedes and is an extension of SSL. TLS and SSL are not interoperable.
Startup file A text file containing information the client needs to access an LDAP directory and download a
configuration profile.

TLS Transport Layer Security. A cryptographic protocol that guarantees privacy and data integrity
between client/server applications communicating over the Internet.
TLS supersedes and is an extension of SSL. TLS and SSL are not interoperable.
ypldapd The NIS/LDAP Gateway daemon, part of the NIS/LDAP Gateway subproduct. ypldapd replaces
the NIS ypserv daemon by accepting NIS client requests and getting the requested information
from an LDAP directory rather than from NIS maps. This daemon is not supported with Windows
ADS.
