Introduction to the Kerberos Products and GSS-API
HP’s Kerberos Server Version 2.0
Chapter 2 57
HP’s Kerberos Server Version 2.0
Kerberos is a network authentication protocol based on the RFC 1510,
designed to provide strong authentication for client or server
applications using shared secret-key cryptography. Kerberos has
emerged as a standard that enhances the security of enterprise-wise
network authentication. HP’s Kerberos Server Version 2.0 is
interoperable with both Microsoft 2000 and MIT’s Kerberos V5 based
Servers.
Remote sessions can be securely authenticated and encrypted by adding
Kerberos to a network. This increases the overall security available to
the users and administrators of that network.
This version of the Kerberos Server offers the following enhanced
features on HP-UX 11i. These features are not supported on the MIT
version 5.0-based Kerberos Server.
Graphical user interface
Dynamic propagation
Multithreaded Server
A highly scalable Database
This version of the Kerberos server integrates with the existing Kerberos
clients on HP-UX 11i, thus providing the end user a full fledged security
solution.
The current version of the Kerberos server supersedes the earlier MIT
based Kerberos server (version 1.0), on HP-UX 11i. This version of the
Kerberos server offers many enhancements when compared to the
previous version.
The subsequent section discuss the various features that are currently
available in the Kerberos server.
GUI Based Administration tool
In the Kerberos server version 1.0 release, the administration tool was a
command-line tool. In the current version, the Kerberos Server 2.0
provides a graphical-user-interface for ease-of-use and to help
administer the Kerberos server database.
