The Reality of Mobile Computing Demands and Dilemmas Early Internet and networking technologies safely assumed the nodes in a network would be stationary and remain physically connected to their Home Network. Nodes were not expected—or designed—to move after connecting to a network. It was possible for nodes to move and attach to the network from different points.

2. Why HP-UX Mobile IPv6 is the Answer HP-UX Mobile IPv6 is the answer to today’s—and tomorrow’s—mobility demands. The free-of-charge and IETF standards-based HP-UX Mobile IPv6 allows Mobile Nodes, such as laptops, PDAs, and cell phones, to remain reachable and constantly connected while roaming and attaching to the network from different locations. Without Mobile IPv6, Mobile Nodes cannot use a single, fixed IPv6 address while they roam.

2.1.1 Protocol Comparison: Mobile IPv4 and Mobile IPv6 Mobile IPv6 benefits from the opportunities provided by IPv6 and from the lessons learned from Mobile IPv4. Additionally, mobility was a core factor in the design of IPv6, where as it was an afterthought in the design of IPv4. For these reasons, Mobile IPv6 has several core operational advantages over Mobile IPv4.

2.2 HP-UX Mobile IPv6 Product Functionality HP-UX Mobile IPv6 includes a kernel-resident STREAMS module that processes and generates Mobility Headers, delivering the following functionality for HP-UX 11i version 1 and 2 servers: • Home Agent functionality • Correspondent Node functionality The primary function of the Home Agent is to provide mobility services to Mobile Nodes in their Home Networks.

2.3.3 Return Routability Procedure Most Mobile Nodes use Route Optimization after they receive a data packet from a Correspondent Node through the Home Agent, thereby indicating the Correspondent Node does not have binding information with the Mobile Node’s current Care-of Address. To establish Route Optimization, the Mobile Node sends a Binding Update message to the Correspondent Node with its current Care-of Address.

2.3.4 Dynamic Home Agent Address Discovery Dynamic Home Agent Address Discovery (DHAAD) allows Mobile Nodes that are away from their home network, and have their home network prefix configured, to dynamically find the address of a Home Agent on their home network. The following list is an overview of the DHAAD process: • Each Home Agent listens to Router Advertisement messages sent by the other Home Agents and records the addresses of these Home Agents.

2.3.11 Prerequisite Software Packaging The TOUR 2.0 package delivers HP-UX Mobile IPv6 and all of its perquisite software in one package. (Note: TOUR 2.0 does not include IPSec A.02.00 or the Mobile IPv6 A.01.00 required patches.) 2.3.12 Dynamic Re-Configuration HP-UX Mobile IPv6 allows system administrators to dynamically change the Mobile IPv6 configuration settings on a node without stopping and restarting the entire system.

3. Conclusion The surging demand for mobile computing and “Always-on” network connections is undeniable. From mobile enterprise workforces, to WLANs on Corporate and University campuses, mobility is no longer a distant fantasy. Deployment numbers are rapidly growing, and are expected to grow even faster in the coming years.
