Verifying the Return Routability Procedure
Use the following procedure to verify the Return Routability procedure between a Mobile Node and
Correspondent Node:
Step 1. Attach a Mobile Node to a foreign network.
Step 2. Allow the Mobile Node to send a Binding Update message to the Home Agent and register from the
foreign network.
Step 3. Use a Correspondent Node to ping the Mobile Node and start the Return Routability procedure.
Step 4. Use the nettl tool on the Home Agent to verify:
the Mobile Node reverse-tunneled the Home Test Init message to the Home Agent
the Home Agent forwarded the Home Test Init message to the Correspondent Node
the Home Agent received the Home Test message sent from the Correspondent Node to the
Mobile Node’s Home Address
the Home Agent tunnelled the Home Test message to the Mobile Node’s Care-of Address
Step 5. Use the nettl tool on the Correspondent Node to verify:
the Home Test Init message arrived from the Mobile Node’s Home Address
the Care-of Test Init message arrived from the Mobile Node’s Care-of Address
the Correspondent Node sent the Home Test message to the Mobile Node’s Home Address
the Correspondent Node sent the Care-of Test message to the Mobile Node’s Care-of Address
Verifying Route Optimization
Use the following procedure to verify Route Optimization:
Step 1. Perform the steps in “Verifying the Return Routability Procedure” on page 96.
Step 2. Use mip6admin -bindings [
-l mobile node home address
] to verify the Mobile Node’s binding
cache entry on the Correspondent Node.
If the Mobile Node’s binding cache entry is on the Correspondent Node, proceed to Step 3.
If the Mobile Node’s binding cache entry is not on the Correspondent Node, troubleshoot the
Mobile Node’s Binding Update message using mip6admin or nettl.
Step 3. Use the nettl tool to verify the Correspondent Node is communicating directly with the Mobile
Node and by passing the Home Agent.
