Prerequisites
System Requirements
The following sections discuss the hardware, disk space, operating system, and other requirements that must
be considered before installing HP-UX DCE 1.9.
Hardware Requirements
You require an HP Integrity server or HP-UX 9000 server.
Disk Space Requirements
Following are the disk space requirements for installing HP-UX DCE 1.9:
• Minimum 32 MB memory space for client-only systems; 64 MB for server systems
• Minimum 92 MB disk space required for a full installation
• Minimum 100 MB swap space for client-only systems; 150 MB for server systems
NOTE HP recommends device swap over file swap.
Operating System Requirements
You require HP-UX 11i v2 for installing HP-UX DCE 1.9.
Other Requirements
Following are the other requirements for installing HP-UX DCE 1.9:
• The HP-UX kernel parameter maxfiles must be increased to 256 and the parameter maxuser must be
increased to 64 for all systems. The maxdsize parameter may have to be increased for some systems.
NOTE You can check and, if necessary, change the kernel parameters, the swap space, or both, via
SAM (the HP-UX System Administration Manager). See “Kernel Parameter
Recommendations” on page 33
• HP-UX DCE 1.9 must be installed on a long-name file system. If you have a short- name file system, you
must first run convertfs(1m) to convert your file system to long names.
Kernel Parameter Recommendations
Hewlett-Packard has found that the default kernel parameter values for a 11i v2 system installed with
Runtime bundles are sufficient for running HP-UX DCE 1.9 clients and servers under normal conditions
(small cells with hundreds of users) with the following exceptions:
• maxfiles must be a minimum of 256 for all systems.
• The default value for maxdsiz is sufficient except in cases where you have many tens of thousands of
users. At this point you should monitor the process size of your secd and cdsd. If the process size
approaches the maxdsiz value, maxdsiz should be increased.
