Description
PRODUCT NAME: HP OpenVMS Common Internet File System V1.0 SPD 82.42.02
DESCRIPTION
This software product description explains the HP
OpenVMS Common Internet File System (CIFS) for
OpenVMS Alpha and OpenVMS Integrity servers.
HP CIFS provides users with seamless le and print in-
teroperability between OpenVMS and Windows-based
clients. The OpenVMS le and print services are based
on the popular open source product, Samba, from
Samba.org. The software runs on OpenVMS Alpha and
OpenVMS Integrity server platforms. It is similar to im-
plementations that are in place today supporting Linux
and UNIX operating environments.
Use of the CIFS requires OpenVMS Version 8.2 or later
for AlphaServers and OpenVMS Version 8.2-1 or later
for Integrity server systems. HP CIFS supports Win-
dows 2000, Windows 2003, and Windows XP clients.
FEATURES
Domain Support
HP CIFS can act as a Member Server of a Windows
200x Active Directory domain. HP CIFS can act as
a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) in its own do-
main, but cannot act as a PDC in a Microsoft Win-
dows domain. HP CIFS is compatible with LDAP en-
abled Samba PDCs (Primary Domain Controllers) both
as BDC (Backup Domain Controller) as well as a Mem-
ber server.
Browser Services
Network browser services are provided by HP CIFS.
Cluster Services
HP CIFS can be installed on any node in an OpenVMS
Cluster. OpenVMS Cluster congurations are fully de-
scribed in the Software Product Description for HP
OpenVMS Cluster Software (SPD 29.78.xx). HP CIFS
for OpenVMS can run on multiple nodes of an Open-
VMS Cluster with access to the same SAMBA$ROOT
directory provided they are running OpenVMS Alpha
Version 8.3 or later or OpenVMS Integrity servers Ver-
sion 8.3 or later with a common RIGHTSLIST and
SYSUAF database. Based on this set up, HP CIFS
supports simultaneous le access by all nodes in the
cluster. In the SAMBA$ROOT directory, HP CIFS main-
tains common accounts database and common cong-
uration information. It also maintains node-specic con-
guration information in the same directory. A separate
instance of HP CIFS can also be run in the cluster but
this node must use a different SAMBA$ROOT directory.
For more information, see the OpenVMS release notes
for the Alpha or Integrity servers version you are run-
ning.
File Services
HP CIFS provides clients with a remote le system that
appears as a transparent extension of the client sys-
tems’ local computing environment. HP CIFS allows
users to share OpenVMS and Microsoft Windows les
with simultaneous access and sharing of les between
Microsoft Windows and OpenVMS. Security on les is
