HP CIFS Server Release Note
HP CIFS Deployment Models
Chapter 1 9
HP CIFS Deployment Models
HP CIFS Server provides many features and options which can be used
effectively in a large variety of mixed Windows and UNIX environments.
This extreme flexibility presents a dizzying array of deployment
scenarios - too many to adequately cover in a practical set of
documentation. To address this abundance of choice, the HP CIFS Server
documentation and training offers a canonical set of deployment models
that cover common functionality choices.
The models focus on basic deployment decisions in the areas of domain
control, authentication, and user/group management. Each deployment
model shows server relationships and assumes native file access from
following supported clients:
• Windows 2000, XP SP1 sand XP SP2
• Windows Terminal Server (NT4 and 2000)
• HP-UX HP CIFS Client
• UNIX workstations (via mounting NFS exported CIFS directories)
Samba Domain Model
The Samba domain model offers the following characteristics and
benefits:
• Consists of a domain with a HP CIFS server configured as a PDC,
one or more HP CIFS Servers acting as BDCs or member servers.
There is no Windows server in this domain model.
• The HP Netscape Directory Server is used as the backend to
consolidate common POSIX and Windows accounts for all HP CIFS
servers.
• Additional HP CIFS servers can be easily added for large deployment
environments.
• Increased high availability through usage of an BDC that can be
promoted to a PDC if the PDC needs to be taken out of services or
fails.
• The PDC-BDC model provides authentication load balancing for
larger networks.
