Executive summary HP-UX Workload Manager (WLM) is a virtualization solution that helps you achieve a true Adaptive Enterprise. As a goal-based policy engine in the HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE), WLM integrates virtualization techniques—including partitioning, resource management, utility pricing, and clustering—and links them to your service level objectives (SLOs) and business priorities.

Overview WLMTK helps you capture the power of WLM. WLM is most powerful when managing CPU-bound applications—it adjusts the CPU allocation of a group of processes known as a workload, basing adjustment on the current needs and performance of the applications in that workload.

Workload management across virtual partitions and nPartitions WLM is optimized for moving cores among hosts such as virtual partitions (vPars) and nPartitions. Using these hosts as workloads, WLM manages workload allocations while maintaining the isolation of their HP-UX instances. WLM automatically moves or “virtually transfers” cores among partitions based on SLOs and priorities that you define for the partitions. To configure WLM to move cores among hosts: 1. Create one or more SLOs for each host. 2.

The remainder of this white paper discusses the benefits of each of these toolkits and how to use them. HP-UX WLM Oracle Database Toolkit HP-UX WLM enables you to place Oracle instances and other applications in their own WLM workloads. With the instances and applications separated, WLM then manages the performance of each instance and application through prioritized SLOs.

These SLOs have different priorities, allowing for a higher-priority, “must-meet” goal and an optional stretch goal. With these SLOs, the Instance1 workload gets 10% of the CPU resources at priority 1.

Give an instance n CPU shares for each user connection to the instance In the following example, SLO increases the CPU resources for the instance’s workload based on the number of user connections. Thus, with five user connections, the workload gets 15%.

Tools in ODBTK This toolkit includes two tools: • wlmoradc—This tool is a data collector for WLM and is designed to provide an easy building block for Oracle instance management with WLM. It takes one or more SQL statements and uses the Oracle tool SQL*Plus to connect to an Oracle instance and execute the statements, returning either the raw value returned from SQL or the elapsed execution time. The results are sent to stdout for human viewing, logging, or most often, for use by WLM.

How to use ODBTK ODBTK comes with numerous example configuration files for both WLM and the included wlmoradc tool. Look at these files to understand how to use ODBTK with WLM. After determining how you want to measure your instances, you can copy and modify the WLM configuration files to reduce your implementation time. Also, ensure to look at the wlmoradc example configuration files. These files store SQL statements, among other items.

WLM can be used with Apache processes, Tomcat, CGI scripts, and related tools using HP-UX Apache-based Web Server 2.x.

HP-UX WLM SAP Toolkit WLM provides integration with the SAP applications through HP-UX WLM SAP Toolkit (SAPTK). SAP has several different process types, including dialog (interactive), batch, and update processes. Each process type might have greater importance at different times of the month. For example, batch processes can become very important at the end of the month when information is being compiled for end-of-month reports.

Example configuration files SAPTK comes with the following example configuration files: • isolate_sap.wlm—Demonstrates how WLM can isolate SAP workloads and allocate CPU resources based on workload usage. This configuration file isolates an entire SAP system, using a single user record. • split_inst.wlm—Demonstrates how WLM can collect SAP instances within the same SAP system and separate them into different workload groups, using WLM’s process map feature.
