VERITAS Volume Manager 3.5 Troubleshooting Guide (August 2002)
Correcting Boot Problems in VxVM Maintenance Mode
22 VERITAS Volume Manager Troubleshooting Guide
Several conditions can prevent the system from being booted normally as indicated by
error messages at boot time. These messages and the suggested actions to remedy the
error conditions are described in the following sections:
◆ “Missing LABEL file”
◆ “Corrupt or Incorrect LABEL File” on page 23
◆ “Missing or Corrupt /etc/vx/volboot File” on page 24
◆ “Missing or Corrupt ioconfig or Device Files” on page 25
Missing LABEL file
The following messages may be displayed at boot time if the LABEL file is missing:
Could not open :LABEL file
Could not read VxVM LABEL file from LIF FS
◆ Description: During system bootup, the LABEL file is used to determine the offset and
length of the root, stand and swap/dump volumes before the VxVM configuration
daemon may be started. A missing LIF LABEL file prevents successful bootup of the
system.
◆ Action: The following example procedure shows the sequence of commands that
should then be used to restore the LABEL file. Replace the disk access name
(c4t8d0s2) and disk media name (rootdisk01) in the example with the ones
corresponding to the VxVM root disk on your system.
a. Enter the following command at the boot prompt to put the system into VxVM
maintenance mode:
hpux -vm
b. Start vxconfigd and list the VxVM root disk:
# vxconfigd
NOTICE: vxvm:vxdmp: added disk array OTHER_DISKS
# vxdisk list
DEVICE TYPE DISK GROUP STATUS
c4t8d0s2 simple rootdisk01 rootdg online
c. Start and mount all the volumes
# vxvol startall
# mountall
