LVM Volume Group Quiesce/Resume
Characteristics of quiesced LVM volume groups
The physical volumes in the volume group remain unchanged until the volume
group is resumed.
Logical volumes may be opened or closed by applications while the volume
group is quiesced.
Depending upon the quiesce mode specified, application reads and writes or just
application writes are quiesced. The corresponding I/O operations are queued
and will complete after the volume group is resumed. When application reads
are allowed, reading from the volume group returns the last data written before
the volume group was quiesced.
While the volume group is quiescing, any pending I/O operations already
processed by LVM and on its way to the disks will be completed normally, once
these I/O operations complete the volume group enters a quiesced state.
Displaying volume group configuration or status information using the
vgdisplay, lvdisplay or lvlnboot commands is allowed when the volume group is
quiesced. The vgdisplay and lvdisplay commands indicate the quiesce mode.
LVM mirror resynchronization commands and configuration commands are
rejected when the volume group is quiesced. The only operational command
allowed when the volume group is quiesced is the vgchange command to resume
the volume group. A volume group that is quiesced must be resumed before the
volume group can be deactivated.
A volume group remains quiesced until it is resumed, but the volume group does
not remain quiesced across system reboots. If the system reboots while the
volume group is quiesced, the volume group will not be quiesced the next time
the volume group is activated.
