2 Using HP SMH to Configure and Administer HP-UX VLANs
This chapter summarizes how to configure and administer HP-UX VLANs using HP SMH. It
addresses the following topics:
• “Overview” (page 29)
• “Navigating HP SMH” (page 29)
• “Adding a VLAN Interface” (page 33)
• “Modifying a VLAN Interface” (page 36)
• “Deleting a VLAN Interface” (page 37)
Overview
As of this release, the HP-UX system administration tool for single-server administration is the
HP System Management Homepage (HP SMH). Using the HP SMH Network Interfaces
Configuration tool reduces the risk of errors and saves your data permanently. HP SMH provides
a single hierarchical menu interface, which enables you to quickly find and invoke applications
to perform the most common system tasks.
NOTE: As of this release, HP SMH replaces System Administration Manager (SAM).
HP-UX VLANs are located in the Networking Interfaces Configuration tools area of HP SMH.
(They were located in the Networking and Communications area of SAM.)
Changes made using HP SMH do not require a reboot to take effect and are persistent across
reboots.
HP SMH offers three interface options for managing HP-UX:
• A web-based graphical interface (GUI)
HP SMH starts this interface if the DISPLAY environment variable is set.
• A terminal user interface (TUI)
HP SMH starts this interface if the DISPLAY environment variable is not set.
• A command-line interface (CLI) (/usr/sbin/ncweb) to invoke the GUI or TUI interface
You can enter /usr/sbin/ncweb from the command line. Doing so takes you directly to
the Network Interfaces Configuration area of HP SMH and opens either a GUI or TUI
interface based on whether or not the DISPLAY environment variable is set.
Use the interface option that best suits your needs.
For additional information on HP SMH, see the HP-UX 11i Version 3 HP-UX System Administrator's
Guide: Overview, the HP-UX System Administrator's Guide: Configuration Management, and smh(1M).
Navigating HP SMH
This section discusses basic navigation tips and the process to start HP SMH and navigate to the
VLAN main configuration page.
General Navigation Tips
When using HP SMH, keep in mind the following:
• The Preview button displays a preview of the commands that run if you select a certain
action (by clicking OK.)
• The Cancel button provides the means to return to the previous page with no action being
taken.
