HP-UX VLAN Administrator's Guide, February 2007
For information on using nwmgr to administer HP-UX VLANs, see Chapter 3 (page 39). For
detailed information about using nwmgr to administer HP-UX VLANs, see nwmgr(1M) and
nwmgr_vlan(1M).
• Manually edit the /etc/rc.config.d/vlanconf file.
Though not generally recommended, another method for administering HP-UX VLANs on
your system is to edit the /etc/rc.config.d/vlanconf file.
Changes made using this method do not take effect until the next reboot.
For more information on this method of configuring and administering HP-UX VLANs, see
Chapter 4 (page 47).
Configuration and Administration Tasks
This section provides a brief overview of general HP-UX VLAN configuration and administration
tasks. These tasks are independent of the administration method used, except where noted
otherwise.
Configuring and administering HP-UX VLANs involves the following key tasks:
• Adding a VLAN Interface
1. Determine a VLAN-capable interface on which to add the VLAN interface.
2. Assign a VLAN ID — this is a required VLAN attribute.
3. Optionally, assign any other attributes. For a list of configurable attributes for HP-UX
VLANs, see Table 1-5 (page 26).
4. Configure IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and associated IP attributes on the VLAN interface
as needed. Administer IP attributes on VLAN interfaces the same way that you do on
physical interfaces.
• Viewing and Modifying a VLAN Interface
1. Determine the VLAN interface to be viewed or modified.
2. View or modify attributes as needed. For a list of configurable attributes for HP-UX
VLANs, see Table 1-5 (page 26).
3. Administer IP attributes on VLAN interfaces the same way that you do on physical
interfaces.
• Deleting a VLAN Interface
1. Determine the VLAN interface to be deleted.
2. Ensure no active applications or commands (such as assigned IP address) are assigned
to the VLAN interface. For example, delete any IP addresses configured on the VLAN
interface.
3. Delete the VLAN interface.
• Other Administration Tasks
— Monitoring statistics on VLAN interfaces (use --stats option)
— Performing critical resource analysis on VLAN interfaces (use --cra operation)
— Viewing detailed (verbose) information on VLAN interfaces (use -v option)
NOTE: You must have superuser privileges to perform all of these tasks except viewing.
HP-UX VLAN Attributes
HP-UX VLAN interfaces have the following types of attributes:
