HP Integrity Virtual Machines Online Migration with IBM Informix Dynamic Server 11.50

12
Test scenarios for HP Integrity Online VM Migration with
IDS 11.50
The following scenarios were tested. Oncheck was used to validate the integrity of the system before
and after the HPVM Online Migration.
Objective: Validate HP Integrity Virtual Machines Online Migration with Integrity VM Guest running
IDS 11.50 migrating from Host A to Host B and client connections not being interrupted during and
after the migration.
Scenarios
1
Basic Sanity migrate VM running IDS without any clients connected to it
Bring up the IDS instance on HPVM1. While it is running, migrate HPVM1 from Host A to Host B.
Ensure that IDS is still running fine. Migrate it back to Host A and ensure it is still running fine.
2
Migrate VM running IDS with Clients connected to it
Initiate some Client connections doing DDL/DML against IDS running on HPVM1 on Host A.
While the clients are connected and transactions are going on, migrate HPVM1 to Host B. Ensure
that IDS is still running fine and Client connections are not lost. Check the integrity of the system is
intact. Migrate HPVM1 from Host B back to Host A and ensure the above are fine.
3
IDS running in multiple guests. Migrate only one of them
Bring up an instance of IDS on HPVM2 on Host A (in addition to the one running on HPVM1 on
Host A) and on HPVM3 running on Host B. Initiate client connections against IDS on HPVM2 and
HPVM3 as well as HPVM1. Migrate HPVM1 to Host B and verify IDS and Client connections are
fine (as in test 2). Also ensure that IDS running on HPVM2 and HPVM3 and the clients connected
to them are not affected at all. Migrate HPVM1 back to Host A and verify all these once again.
4
Negative Scenario target host fails during online migration
Initiate some Client connections doing DDL/DML against IDS running on HPVM1 on Host A.
While the clients are connected and transactions are going on, migrate HPVM1 to Host B. Before
the migration is completed, simulate a failure on Host B (for example, power failure/network
failure/system crash). Ensure that the migration is aborted cleanly and IDS and the Clients
continue to run fine on HPVM1 on Host A.
5
Migrate VM running IDS with large number of Clients connected to it
This is similar to Scenario 2, but with a larger number of client connections. The connections can
be increased by configuring the test parameters.
6
Test different levels of backup/restore after migration
Initiate some Client connections doing DDL/DML against IDS running on HPVM1 on Host A. Take
a Level 0 backup using OnBar. While the clients are connected and transactions are going on,
migrate HPVM1 to Host B. Ensure that IDS is still running fine and Client connections are not lost.
Take a Level 1 backup of the migrated IDS running on Host B. Restore from the backups on Host
B and make sure that the restore is successful. Migrate HPVM1 back to Host A and verify that the
system is intact.
