Audience
This document targets customers who have Instant Capacity (iCAP) in their HP Integrity
Superdome 2 systems.
Purpose
To document best practices for managing the iCAP environment to:
• Maintain the iCAP inventory
• Manage Temporary Instant Capacity (TiCAP)
• Enable compliance with iCAP systems
Following best practices helps in not only maintaining compliance with the iCAP contract but
also facilitates smooth upgrades of HP Integrity Superdome 2 servers to future releases.
Special note:
The first release of the iCAP solution on HP Integrity Superdome 2 servers does not use codewords to
set up the iCAP server inventory. Customers must initially set up the inventory to match what they have
ordered and properly use the iCAP commands to maintain compliance with the iCAP Terms and
Conditions. A complete list of iCAP commands is available in the Instant Capacity User’s Guide for
Version 10.x located at
www.hp.com/go/hp-icap-docs
Overview
The terms used in this document are also explained under the section “Definitions of terms used in this
document.” A complete list of terms used by the HP iCAP program is available in the iCAP glossary
available at
www.hp.com/go/hp-icap-docs
General iCAP rules
An environment, for example the server group when GiCAP is purchased, is out of compliance when:
1. Any partition has a negative TiCAP Balance
2. After excluding all of the cores running TiCAP the total number of active cores plus the
intended active cores of any partition at an EFI boot prompt exceeds the cores with Permanent
Usage Rights
An iCAP system is out of compliance when the total amount of active memory is more than the amount
of memory usage rights purchased for that system.
The number of active cores in a partition and TiCAP balance can be verified using the “icapstatus”
command within each partition. The amount of active memory in a partition can be verified using
“machinfo” command.
For the iCAP environment to remain compliant, the commands must be used to adjust the number of
active cores, and iCAP blades with iCAP memory must be powered down.
It is strongly recommended that customers regularly update as well as check their iCAP inventory on
the
HP Utility Pricing Solutions Portal. This way, customers and HP will have similar data.
