Instant Capacity (iCAP) Glossary (May 2010)

Instant Capacity (iCAP) Glossary
Instant Capacity (iCAP) The HP Utility Pricing Program for partitionable HP 9000 and HP Integrity
servers provides inactive hardware (processors, cell boards and memory) that is installed and
ready for use when activated in the future. Instant Capacity provides a means to defer hardware
costs, simplify capacity planning, improve resource utilization, eliminate over-provisioning and
implement a truly virtualized environment.
Usage Rights The permission, or right, to use a hardware component. Usage Rights are implicitly
included with all Active Hardware, and not included with iCAP Hardware. Usage Rights for iCAP
Hardware are purchased separately when the Customer wants to activate and use the iCAP
Hardware component.
Active Hardware Traditional hardware that includes Usage Rights and is immediately available
for use by the operating system.
iCAP Hardware A processor core, cell board or memory module that is physically installed in a
server but does not include Usage Rights and is not used by the operating system. iCAP
components do not require SW licenses or support.
Right to Use (RTU) The purchasable Usage Rights for an iCAP Hardware component which
activates the component for use.
Codeword The mechanism used to deliver Usage Rights to iCAP Customers. Once a purchase
order has been placed for a Right to Use (RTU), the Codeword is available for download from the
Utility Pricing Solutions Portal. There are 4 main types of Codewords:
1. Right to use (RTU) Codeword To permanently activate an iCAP component, an RTU
codeword must be applied. The codeword specifies the quantity and type of
components to permanently activate.
2. Temporary Capacity (TiCAP) Codeword The amount of TiCAP is specified in the
codeword. After the codeword is applied, the TiCAP Balance would increase.
3. Add-on/Upgrade Codeword When iCAP components are added to a system, an add-on
codeword is used. When upgrading from a previous version of iCAP (prior to version
6.0), the use of an upgrade codeword is required. These Codewords are applied by
either HP ASCs/CEs or the Customer.
4. Global Instant Capacity (GiCAP) Codeword Adds sharing rights to the GiCAP Group
Manager system.
