HP Instant Capacity Version 10.x Release Notes Abstract These release notes describe known issues and other information specific to HP Instant Capacity Version 10.x. All personnel with system administrator access (that is, with root login privileges on HP-UX systems, or Administrators on OpenVMS systems) to an Instant Capacity system should read and understand the contents of this document and the implications of managing an Instant Capacity system.

Changes in Version 10.03 from Version 10.02 (HP-UX 11i v3 only) TiCAP warning period fix for HP Integrity Superdome 2 The problem has been fixed where the temporary capacity warning period did not default to 15 days after installing iCAP software on HP Integrity Superdome 2. GiCAP member seizure fix The problem has been fixed where seizure from a member in a GiCAP group followed by a restore operation resulted in a corrupted GiCAP database. GiCAP provider fix A memory leak in the GiCAP provider was fixed.
iCAP WBEM provider fix A problem was fixed where the iCAP WBEM provider returned incorrect values when the nPar partition ids for a complex were not sequential. This problem was only seen when using a WBEM tool such as wbemexec. It was not a problem when using the iCAP command line interface. The problem is fixed in 9.01. GiCAP database problems fixed The following two problems were fixed in iCAP version 9.
Manager, and all OS instances of all member systems must have the CIM Server property sslClientVerificationMode set to a value of “optional”. GiCAP and iCAP do not use any network ports directly. However, version 9.0 GiCAP uses WBEM/SSL for the communication protocol, requiring use of the CIM HTTPS port 5989.
this has been changed to pre-version 8.02 behavior so that TiCAP is debited as a compliance enforcement mechanism only on these systems: • A system where TiCAP has been applied (the TiCAP balance is nonzero) • A GiCAP group member system (or a system which had previously been a GiCAP group member and has a nonzero TiCAP balance) • A system which has had a TiCAP debit within the past 24 hours TiCAP debit fixes Two race conditions that might have caused incorrect TiCAP debiting have been fixed.
New log file entries When asset reports cannot be sent, new entries are added to the iCAP log file (/var/adm/ icap.log). New GiCAP log file (/var/adm/GiCAP.log) entries have been added to reflect high availability operations. Changes in Version 8.03.01 from Version 8.
To support Disaster Recovery, the icapmanage -x option was expanded to allow the transfer of usage rights not just from single unreachable partitions, but also from members which are completely unreachable. In the case of unavailable group members, the transfer is limited to a specific time period of 10 days. A new option, icapmanage -z, was added to allow users to restore previously seized core usage rights to a specified host.
Changes to the GiCAP Database iCAP version 8.02 GiCAP Group Managers store more information about the members of a group. This information must be fetched from the various group members when converting an earlier version of the GiCAP database to the current version. This information cannot be fetched if all hosts of a GiCAP Group member cannot be contacted. Therefore, HP recommends updating a GiCAP Group Manager system to iCAP version 8.
Other Changes Fixed a problem where an icapmodify -d or an icapmodify -s operation would erroneously issue an exit code of success even if the operation was only partially satisfied. With this release, a partially satisfied request will correctly exit with an error code. Error messages from nPar Provider have been standardized and now include an “NPAR” prefix. ssh can now be configured with a banner. In previous releases, this would produce errors when managing a GiCAP group (icapmanage error).
Interaction between iCAP and gWLM (HP-UX) gWLM version 2.5 fails to migrate CPUs if it is used with iCAP version 8.00 (or later) and there is a zero or negative TiCAP balance. This problem does not exist in later versions of gWLM.
from the partition, shutting down the partition from within the operating system using shutdown -R -H, or with the MP RR command. However, even if the cells are made inactive, the Instant Capacity software reserves usage rights to minimize the possibility that the complex is taken out of compliance if the partition is booted with all cores active. Unique considerations apply to this assumed reserved state.
the rest of the group does not believe it to be a standby Manager. If you want to re-establish it as the standby, simply issue the command icapmanage -a -S on the active Group Manager. However, if you have already established another standby Group Manager (for example), or just want to remove the leftover standby information, you need to stop the cimprovider and remove the GiCAP database from the previously failed system.
is always available to all members of the group. Note that in version 8.02 or later, the verbose option (-v) is enhanced to show more information, most notably the TiCAP balance held by the Group Manager. Automatic multi-homing not supported GiCAP does not support automatic multi-homing (multiple NICs and IPs for a host). A member is always contacted using the hostname (or list of hostnames) provided when it is added to the group. A member always communicates with the Group Manager through its hostname.
• If you have a virtual partitioned environment, the Virtual Partitions (vPars) software (bundle T1335AC) must be version A.03.05 or higher. vPars is available separately and is not included with the OE. • (GiCAP only) The CIM Server configuration property sslClientVerificationMode must be set to a value of “optional” on all GiCAP Group Managers and on all OS instances of all member systems. (The CIM Server may need to be restarted if the property was not previously set to this value.
NOTE: On HP-UX 11i v2 systems, updated firmware might be required by the nPar or Virtual Partition software, as documented for these products. Required Patches for HP-UX 11i v2 The following patches are required for Instant Capacity version 10.x on HP-UX 11i v2: • PHKL_33752: S700_800 11.
• WBEMCIM bundle (version X2.92 or higher) — Optionally installed with OpenVMS Version 8.4. • nParProvider bundle — Installed with OpenVMS Version 8.4. Usage Rights Requirement A system managed under the Instant Capacity program can include one or more components (core, cell, or memory) that are without usage rights. Before you can use these components, you must obtain additional usage rights.
Upgrading Version 8.x Groups to Version 9.x or Later Instant Capacity versions 8.x and 9.x (or later) are incompatible with respect to GiCAP group membership. A complex that is not part of a GiCAP group may run a mixture of iCAP 8.x and iCAP 9.x (or later), but in a group, all the member hosts and the GiCAP Group Manager for that group must be running iCAP 9.x (or later). The communication protocol changed with iCAP version 9.0; version 8.
authentication, facilitated by the exchange of digital certificates between the communication partners. The certificates are created by the GiCAP software, typically at installation time using the /etc/opt/iCAP/GiCAP_keygen script. Certificates are exchanged between pairs of host systems as a result of the following operations: • When a member is added to a group (icapmanage -a -g -m) certificates are exchanged between the active group manager and each host specified for the new member.
Consider the case where someone accidently deletes the certificate files in the /etc/opt/iCAP directory on a GiCAP member (GiCAPcert.pem and GiCAPpkey.pem).
