HP Instant Capacity user's guide for Version 10.x, August 2010 (T1428-90080)

Activating Cores
Cores can be dynamically activated on a partition to address any additional demand. As
mentioned before, iCAP does not perform any compliance check to see if the total active cores
exceed the total usage rights purchased. It is required that the cores should be available to the
partition for activating them. that is, core activation request will fail if the request exceeds the
assigned number of cores for the partition. Execute the following command to activate the cores:
icapmodify a <number of cores to activate>
Sample output:
# icapmodify -a 1
4 cores are intended to be active and are currently active.
Using iCAP Memory
The iCAP memory is offered in units of 16 GB, and the RTU is available in units of 4 GB. During
the time of activation, you must purchase enough iCAP RTUs to activate all the memory on the
cell blade. After the purchase, the iCAP cell blade can be turned on. You must reboot the partition
on which the iCAP memory is activated for the iCAP changes to take effect. The cores in the cell
blade with inactive memory need not be activated for the memory to be activated. After adding
a cell blade to a partition to activate the memory, you must adjust the number of active cores to
ensure compliance. Figure 8-1 describes the configuration options for iCAP memory.

iCAP Use Cases
Core migration between partitions in a complex
Active cores can be redistributed across any or all partitions of the complex if those partitions
contain inactive cores.
