HP Instant Capacity Release Notes for Versions 8.x
Support for New Hardware
Instant Capacity version 8.0 included support for the rx7640 and rx8640 Integrity servers on
HP-UX 11i v2 and OpenVMS.
Modified icapmodify (icod_modify) Command
The commands “icapmodify -d”, “icapmodify -a”, and “icapmodify -s” have been
enhanced so they will work on systems which do not contain Instant Capacity components. This
allows you to test the use of Instant Capacity, and it allows non-Instant Capacity systems to
participate in a GiCAP group and share usage rights.
Terminology Changes
Terminology changes were made to the documentation, to the man pages, and to all messages
from Instant Capacity software. The terminology changes include:
• “Instant Capacity on Demand” or “iCOD” changed to “Instant Capacity”, or “iCAP”.
• The Utility Pricing program changed terminology to be consistent with new HP definitions
of “processor”, “CPU”, and “core” that account for the wide range of packaging available
in modern chips.
• References to “licensed” or “unlicensed” changed to refer to “usage rights ”or “without
usage rights” to be more aligned with the “Right to Use” (RTU) terminology.
• References to “iCOD component” changed to reflect the reality that on an Instant Capacity
system, individual components are not identified as iCAP, but instead the software tracks
the number of components which must be inactive due to a lack of usage rights.
Command Name Changes
Instant Capacity command names changed as follows:
• icod_stat became icapstatus
• icod_modify became icapmodify
• icod_notify became icapnotify
The man pages were also renamed to reflect the command changes: “man icap”,
“man icapmanage”, “man icapmodify”, “man icapstatus”, “man icapnotify”, and
“man icapd”.
References to the previous command names and man pages were linked to the current commands
and man pages.
Modified icapstatus (icod_stat) Command
The output of the icapstatus command (formerly icod_stat) changed to reflect the new
terminology and incorporated several new features. Highlights include:
• References to “processor” or “CPU” changed to “core”
• References to “iCOD” components changed to “number of <component_type> without usage
rights”
• A more concise description of Instant Capacity resources among the partitions (condensed
to one section instead of two)
• New line item for the number of inactive cores on the local hard partition
• New line item showing “Additional cores that can be activated with temporary capacity”
• If the server participates in a GiCAP group, some information about the group and about
borrowed or loaned usage rights is included
The icapstatus command on systems which do not contain Instant Capacity components
gives detailed information about the system instead of the abbreviated information it previously
reported.
