HP Instant Capacity Release Notes for Versions 8.x
Changes in Version 8.1 (OpenVMS only)
Implementation of Global Instant Capacity (GiCAP)
GiCAP is fully functional in iCAP version 8.1 on OpenVMS systems. The Group Manager must
be an HP-UX system running Instant Capacity software version 8.01.01 or later.
Changes in Version 8.01.01 from Version 8.01 (HP-UX only)
NParProvider Requirements
The dependency on the NParProvider version was updated because of an important fix in
NParProvider related to powered-off cells.
GiCAP Rights Seizure Changes
iCAP version 8.01.01 included fixes to allow rights seizure (the icapmanage -x command) to
work in situations where the cells in a failed partition are still powered up. This enabled failover
without requiring manual intervention to power down the cells before the rights seizure operation.
However, even with this change, it is important to remember that cells in any partition with
iCAP components, and where the iCAP daemon is not running, must be powered down within
12 hours in order to avoid either TiCAP consumption or a non-compliance situation.
Changes in Version 8.01 from Version 8.00.01 (HP-UX only)
Support for HP-UX 11i v3
iCAP version 8.01.x is now supported on HP-UX 11i v3 systems.
Support for hyperthreading (HP-UX 11i v3 only)
iCAP version 8.01.x included support for the hyperthreading features introduced in HP-UX 11i
v3; however, iCAP continues to operate at the core level. If icapmodify -a 1 is used to activate
a core when hyperthreaded cores are enabled, it will activate all threads on that core, and
temporary capacity will be charged by core activity rather than hyperthreads. In addition, since
HP-UX references to “CPU” and “spu” generally refer to hyperthreads (when enabled), iCAP
core counts and HP-UX CPU/spu counts may differ.
Installation on Virtual Machine Guests
With this release, iCAP can now be installed on Virtual Machine Guests. Although iCAP is not
supported on VM Guests, the software may be installed and any attempt to run iCAP commands
will result in a message stating that the software is not supported on a VM Guest.
Implementation of Global Instant Capacity (GiCAP)
GiCAP is fully functional in iCAP version 8.01.x. Any sharing rights codewords or grouping
rules files acquired prior to version 8.01.x are not valid. The Group Manager must be an HP-UX
system running Instant Capacity software version 8.01.01 or later.
Changes in system messages
When the icapd daemon is started, a message is written to the /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log
file. In addition, a number of installation warning messages were changed to notes in order to
reduce the number of warnings written to the syslog file.
Running icapmodify on a non-iCAP system
On a non-iCAP system, icapmodify -a can be used after icapmodify -d to bring a partition
back to its original number of activated cores. In previous releases, when processor cores were
