Overview of the Instant Capacity Release Notes Welcome Welcome to the Instant Capacity Release Notes for versions 8.x. HP’s Instant Capacity software product provides the ability to instantly increase or decrease processing capacity on specified HP enterprise servers. With Instant Capacity, you initially purchase an HP enterprise server with a specified amount of active processing capacity, and a specified amount of inactive processing capacity (Instant Capacity components).

2 Major Changes, New Features and Requirements of Instant Capacity 8.x This chapter covers the following topics: • “Program Requirements” (page 15) • “Summary of New Features and Changes” (page 16) • “Known Problems” (page 25) • “Software Requirements” (page 27) • “Usage Rights Requirement” (page 30) • “GiCAP Requirements” (page 31) The following documentation is only a summary of the Instant Capacity 8.x major changes and features. See the Instant Capacity User’s Guide for versions 8.
Summary of New Features and Changes This section summarizes the new features and changes of the Instant Capacity product. Changes in Version 8.03 from Version 8.02.01 (HP-UX only) Support for vPars A.03.05 on HP-UX 11.11 iCAP version 8.03 includes support for vPars A.03.05, and support for the “integrated virtual partition environment” on HP-UX 11.11, previously available only on HP-UX 11.23 and 11.31 systems. With this release, vPars A.03.05 is the minimum required version. Support for vPars version A.03.
NOTE: The Group Manager must be running iCAP version 8.02.01 or later, and all known hosts on the complex containing a failed group member must be running iCAP version 8.02 or later, in order to enable full Disaster Recovery features. Changes in Version 8.02 from Version 8.01.
Additional improvements were made to the error handling on GiCAP database write errors. Previously, a write error may have resulted in incorrect gain or loss of usage rights within the group. Improved GiCAP Logging GiCAP logging was improved with this release. The GiCAP log file /var/adm/GiCAP.log includes logging for events such as usage rights transfers, TiCAP transfers, usage rights releases and compliance events.
Changes in Version 8.1 (OpenVMS only) Implementation of Global Instant Capacity (GiCAP) GiCAP is fully functional in iCAP version 8.1 on OpenVMS systems. The Group Manager must be an HP-UX system running Instant Capacity software version 8.01.01 or later. Changes in Version 8.01.01 from Version 8.01 (HP-UX only) NParProvider Requirements The dependency on the NParProvider version was updated because of an important fix in NParProvider related to powered-off cells.
added to a non-iCAP partition, icapmodify operations were required in order to activate the newly added cores. With this release, the icapmodify operation is no longer needed. Running icapstatus on a non-iCAP system For a complex which does not include any Instant Capacity components, the Intended Active output of the icapstatus command was changed. icapstatus reports a value of the total number of activated configured cores for Intended Active.
Changes in Version 8.00.01 from Version 8.00 (HP-UX only) Modifications of Remote Complexes A problem was fixed where an attempt to modify remote complexes would fail with a message “@117:Error: Operation not approved due to the following low-level error: index out of range”. Error When Cells are Powered Down When a cell in a complex is powered down, iCAP reported the following error message in the /var/adm/syslog/syslog.
Support for New Hardware Instant Capacity version 8.0 included support for the rx7640 and rx8640 Integrity servers on HP-UX 11i v2 and OpenVMS. Modified icapmodify (icod_modify) Command The commands “icapmodify -d”, “icapmodify -a”, and “icapmodify -s” have been enhanced so they will work on systems which do not contain Instant Capacity components. This allows you to test the use of Instant Capacity, and it allows non-Instant Capacity systems to participate in a GiCAP group and share usage rights.
When icapstatus reports a value of 0 for Intended Active, it means that all configured cores will be activated. This is normal for a complex which does not include any Instant Capacity components. If cores are deactivated on one partition of such a system (as described for the new feature “demo mode”), the Intended Active and Actual Active reported for the partition change to reflect the deactivations.
• • • • • • • • became “Additional cores that can be assigned with current usage rights” and “Number of cores that could be assigned with additional usage rights”. A problem with the configuration change notification e-mail was fixed. Previously when a deferred configuration change was requested, sometimes the e-mail incorrectly stated that deactivation occurred when it was really a deferred activation.
Known Problems Occasional Failure Message (HP-UX) On a busy system, you may occasionally get the message “Failure writing Instant Capacity data to Dynamic Profile”. This happens because the Instant Capacity software needs to update the volatile data which is synchronized by the MP. If there are multiple readers and writers accessing the data at the same time, there is a natural race condition that can result in a failure to update the data.
group is always represented by the group total reported by icapmanage -s, and that total is always available to all members of the group. Note that in version 8.02 or later the verbose option (-v) has been enhanced to show more information, in particular to show the TiCAP balance held by the Group Manager. GiCAP does not support IPv6. IPv4 is supported. GiCAP does not support multi-homing (multiple NICs/IPs for a host).
Software Requirements Every HP-UX and OpenVMS partition in an Instant Capacity system is required to have the Instant Capacity software installed and the icapd daemon running on HP-UX systems, or the ICAP_SERVER process running on OpenVMS systems. You must maintain the Instant Capacity software until all program requirements are fulfilled and the system is no longer considered an Instant Capacity system. If you are using Global Instant Capacity, all systems must be running Instant Capacity versions 8.x.
IMPORTANT: For the most recent required patches, see the Instant Capacity Installation page on the HP web site http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot (search for “B9073BA”). HP-UX 11i v2 Requirements and Dependent Products The following software is required for Instant Capacity versions 8.x on HP-UX 11i v2: □ □ □ □ □ □ □ HP-UX 11i v2 iCOD software bundle B9073BA (versions 8.
OpenVMS 8.3-1H1 Requirements The following software is required for Instant Capacity versions 8.x on OpenVMS 8.3-1H1: □ □ □ □ □ hp OpenVMS V8.3-1H1 for Integrity Servers, or later iCAP software bundle BA484AA (version 8.1) — included with OpenVMS 8.3-1H1 and automatically installed on relevant systems when 8.3-1H1 is initially installed WBEMCIM bundle (version A2.0-A051013F or higher) — optionally installed with OpenVMS 8.3-1H1 NParProvider bundle — installed with OpenVMS 8.
Usage Rights Requirement A system managed under the Instant Capacity program may include one or more components (core, cell, or memory) that are without usage rights. Before you can use these components, additional usage rights must be obtained. Usage rights can either be purchased from HP, or if the system is a member of a Global Instant Capacity group, usage rights may be temporarily borrowed from another member of the group, as described in the GiCAP section of “Changes in Version 8.00 from Versions 7.
GiCAP Requirements Software Requirements In order to use Global Instant Capacity, all partitions on all servers in the group must be running Instant Capacity version 8 or later. The Group Manager must be an HP-UX system running Instant Capacity version 8.01.01 or later. In order to enable the GiCAP Disaster Recovery features, the Group Manager must be running iCAP version 8.02.01 or later, and all known hosts on member complexes must be running iCAP version 8.02 or later.
