HP Instant Capacity release notes for Version 10.x, August 2010 (T1428-90081)
GiCAP Requirements
Software and System Requirements
To use Global Instant Capacity, all partitions on all servers in the group must be running Instant
Capacity version 9.0 or later. The Group Manager must be an HP-UX system running Instant
Capacity version 9.0 or later.
GiCAP now uses SSL certificates when making remote connections, rather than SSH as in previous
releases. The GiCAP Group Manager and all OS instances of all member systems must set the
value of the CIM Server configuration property sslClientVerificationMode to “optional”.
GiCAP and iCAP do not use any network ports directly. However, version 9.x (or later) GiCAP
uses WBEM/SSL for the communication protocol, requiring use of the CIM HTTPS port 5989.
GiCAP also uses ping (which uses port 7 for the echo protocol) and host lookup services
(getaddrinfo and getnameinfo) which may use the Domain Name System (DNS), Network
Information Service (NIS), or a local host file to provide the lookup function.
The format and file name of the grouping rules file changed with the release of Instant Capacity
version 8.01. Earlier versions of the grouping rules file are invalid. The Instant Capacity installation
does not include a default grouping rules file. Grouping rules must be downloaded from the HP
Utility Pricing Solutions web portal:
http://www.hp.com/go/icap/portal
Codeword Requirements
While GiCAP is part of Instant Capacity and is installed at the same time as iCAP, it is not enabled
during installation. To create groups and share resources across groups, you must purchase
GiCAP Sharing Rights, acquire the GiCAP codeword from the HP Utility Pricing Solutions portal
(http://www.hp.com/go/icap/portal), and apply the associated codeword to the Group Manager
system. Application of the Sharing Rights codeword to the Group Manager system enables the
addition of members with Instant Capacity components to groups. In addition, you must acquire
grouping rules from the portal and apply those rules to the Group Manager system. GiCAP
Sharing Rights and grouping rules are described in the HP Instant Capacity user’s guide for Version
10.x.
Upgrading Version 8.x Groups to Version 9.x or Later
Instant Capacity versions 8.x and 9.x (or later) are incompatible with respect to GiCAP group
membership. A complex that is not part of a GiCAP group may run a mixture of iCAP 8.x and
iCAP 9.x (or later), but in a group, all the member hosts and the GiCAP Group Manager for that
group must be running iCAP 9.x (or later). The communication protocol changed with iCAP
version 9.0; version 8.x GiCAP Group Managers and group members cannot communicate with
version 9.x (or later) systems. This difference in the communication protocol prohibits GiCAP
groups from supporting both iCAP 8.x and iCAP 9.x (or later).
Prior to installing the iCAP version 9.x (or later) software, ensure that WBEM version A.02.05 or
later is installed. WBEM uses the CIM HTTPS port for communication. GiCAP also requires the
ability to ping the Group Manager and member systems.
Upgrading a version 8.x GiCAP group to a version 9.x (or later) group requires several steps:
1. Install iCAP version 9.x (or later) on the Group Manager, any planned standby Group
Manager, and each OS instance (host) of each group member. The installations may be done
in any order.
2. Set up a CIM Server configuration property (described below) on the Group Manager, any
planned standby Group Manager, and each OS instance of each group member.
3. Re-add each group member to the group it already belongs to.
