2 Major Changes, New Features, and Requirements of Instant Capacity Version 10.x This chapter covers the following topics: • “Program Requirements” (page 19) • “Summary of New Features and Changes” (page 20) • “Known Problems” (page 27) • “Software Requirements” (page 32) • “Usage Rights Requirement” (page 35) • “GiCAP Requirements” (page 36) The following sections provide only a summary of the Instant Capacity Version 10.x major changes and features.
Summary of New Features and Changes This section summarizes the new features and changes of the Instant Capacity product. Changes in Version 10.02 from Version 10.01 (HP-UX) A problem was fixed where after a reboot of a partition on HP Integrity Superdome 2, the number of actual active cores was not matching the number of intended active cores for that partition. Changes in Version 10.01 from Version 10.
iCAP 9.01 and partner functionality iCAP 9.01 is the version required for use with VSE 4.1. While iCAP Manager 4.1 is able to monitor iCAP systems with earlier versions of iCAP, it requires 9.01 in order to configure iCAP systems. gWLM 4.1 requires iCAP 9.01 for GiCAP integration support (single-system management is supported with earlier iCAP versions).
Improvements in icapmanage error and status messages In previous releases, running the icapmanage –r –m command on a member not defined in any group produced an unclear error message. The command now fails with an error message stating that the member cannot be found in any group.
Changes to icapstatus output The icapstatus command has been changed so that the Actual Active cores count now includes the total number of cores assigned to the vPar database, including any cores used by an inaccessible virtual partition. The GiCAP section of the icapstatus output has been expanded and now includes information about the active Group Manager and the standby Group Manager.
Changes in Version 8.03 from Version 8.02.01 (HP-UX) Support for vPars A.03.05 on HP-UX 11.11 iCAP version 8.03 included support for vPars A.03.05, and support for the “integrated virtual partition environment” on HP-UX 11.11, previously available only on HP-UX 11.23 and 11.31 systems. With this release, vPars A.03.05 became the minimum required version. Support for vPars version A.03.05 integration on HP-UX 11.11 systems allows users to manage 11.11 and 11.23 vPars with the same vparmonitor.
negative even if temporary capacity has never been purchased or applied; it means that the system has gone out of compliance. Also, if Temporary Capacity is negative and the number of active cores exceeds the number of core usage rights for the complex, at boot time automatic deactivation of cores may occur. This “boottime enforcement” to maintain compliance is not new, although previously there were gaps in enforcement which have now been fixed.
Adding non-iCAP systems to a GiCAP Group In previous releases, iCAP would not authorize the activation of a core on a vPar with an Intended Active count of zero. This is fixed, and adding a complex with no iCAP components to a group is now permitted. Improvements in Usage Rights Transfers Improvements were made to usage rights transfers in a noncompliant GiCAP group. With this improvement, users can reclaim loaned usage rights even when the group is noncompliant.
Known Problems TiCAP warning period does not default to 15 days After installing iCAP version 10.01 on HP Integrity Superdome 2, the temporary capacity expiration warning period is set to 0 days instead of the default 15 days (this can be confirmed by running the icapstatus command). This problem can be solved by running the icapmodify -w number_of_days command to set the warning period to the required value.
or: ERROR: The following low-level WBEM error occurred: Locking or unlocking the target failed. These errors result from contention for system resources from the various partitions in the complex. If you see these messages, retry the Instant Capacity operation.
• • Authorize the use of temporary capacity on requested activations (using the -t option). This allows the reserved usage rights across the complex to exceed the number of actual usage rights. Temporary capacity is charged only if the number of active cores exceeds the number of actual usage rights. If the failed partition remains inactive and the number of active cores does not exceed the count of actual usage rights, temporary capacity is not charged. You must be careful with this method.
IMPORTANT: Do not issue the above sequence of commands on any system that is the active Group Manager for the group, as it removes the GiCAP database entirely and leaves the group members in an orphaned state. icapmanage hangs when specifying illegal standby group manager When adding a standby Group Manager using the icapmanage -a -S command, you cannot specify a system to be a standby for itself.
Considerations when upgrading hardware on a Group Manager If you upgrade the hardware on a Group Manager system, you must preserve and restore the UUID and the partition information on the system. Removal of member from a group after reignite In some circumstances, attempting to remove a member from a group after reigniting one or more hosts on the member will fail. A workaround is to update the host list of the member, removing and re-adding the reignited hosts.
Software Requirements Every HP-UX and OpenVMS partition in an Instant Capacity system is required to have the Instant Capacity software installed and the icapd daemon running (on HP-UX systems), or the ICAP_SERVER process running (on OpenVMS systems). You must maintain the Instant Capacity software until all program requirements are fulfilled and until the system is no longer considered an Instant Capacity system. If you are using GiCAP, all systems must be running Instant Capacity version 9.x (or later).
IMPORTANT: For the most recent required patches, see the Instant Capacity Installation page on the HP Software Depot (search for “B9073BA”): http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot HP-UX 11i v2 Requirements and Dependent Products The following software is required for Instant Capacity version 10.x on HP-UX 11i v2: • • • • • • • HP-UX 11i v2 iCAP software bundle B9073BA (version 10.x) — On the 11i v2 Applications Software media, or download the most recent version from the HP Software Depot at http://www.hp.
• • If you have a virtual partitioned environment, the Virtual Partitions (vPars) software (bundle T1335BC) must be version A.05.01 or higher. vPars is available separately and is not included with the OE. (GiCAP only) The CIM Server configuration property sslClientVerificationMode must be set to a value of “optional” on all GiCAP Group Managers and on all OS instances of all member systems. (The CIM Server may need to be restarted if the property was not previously set to this value.
Usage Rights Requirement A system managed under the Instant Capacity program can include one or more components (core, cell, or memory) that are without usage rights. Before you can use these components, you must obtain additional usage rights. Usage rights can either be purchased from HP, or, if the system is a member of a GiCAP group, borrowed temporarily from another member of the group, as described in the HP Instant Capacity user’s guide for Version 10.x.
GiCAP Requirements Software and System Requirements To use Global Instant Capacity, all partitions on all servers in the group must be running Instant Capacity version 9.0 or later. The Group Manager must be an HP-UX system running Instant Capacity version 9.0 or later. GiCAP now uses SSL certificates when making remote connections, rather than SSH as in previous releases.
Communication between GiCAP member hosts and the GiCAP manager requires the CIM Server configuration property sslClientVarificationMode to be set to “optional” on all GiCAP member OS instances, the GiCAP manager, and any planned standby GiCAP manager. This configuration attribute is not dynamic and must be set using the -p option. You must restart the cimserver to set the value. For details, see cimconfig(1M).
Whenever the GiCAP software needs to exchange SSL certificates between hosts it will prompt for the root password so that it can exchange the certificates. If the GiCAP software needs to exchange SSL certificates it will remove any existing certificates with the same “Issuer” and “Subject” attributes as the certificates the GiCAP software wishes to install. WBEM does not allow the installation of certificates with the same Issuer and Subject as previously installed certificates.
To complete the repair you must either re-add the member to the group using a command on the active group manager similar to: icapmanage -a -m xyz:x,y,z -g One Or use: icapmanage -Q The icapmanage -Q command will not reestablish communication between the member host and any standby manager. If a standby manager is being used, you must specify the standby manager again with a command such as: icapmanage -a -S gm2.ba.ff.
